Hi all,
Did anyone see which episode was screened last Saturday nite? Was it edited? I set up to record it on timer as I was away and all I've got is an hour of some radio channel (no picture) sounding like a flipping Indian restaurant; the cable box decided to "do it's own thing" obviously :-D If anyone could answer my questions, I'd be grateful, thanks. Thanks for replying :-) The cable box is always having "problems" - freezing; crashing; changing channels all by itself (usually overnight). Absolutely useless :-D Mind you, I understand Sky boxes aren't much better........... Sorry to be OT Merry Chrimbo everyone :-) Sarah |

Freeview round this area is not good for some reason, all those people I know who had it have gone over to Sky or cable. Do you know if cable (as opposed to Sky) are planning on transmitting HD any time in the future? Back on topic; I see ITV4 have dropped UFO this coming Saturday in favour of - um - (consults Radio Times here) - a film entitled "Battle of Midway" :-( I see that Space:1999 is still scheduled for its regular slot on Christmas day though. Wonder if this means they are cancelling the run? Sarah (UK) |

Oh good - glad to know this, thanks John :-) > Never be surprised at the ways of schedulers. Can't see why they've taken UFO off for some film. I was really looking forward to seeing UFO on Christmas eve! I think I'll watch "Kill Straker" and listen to the audio commentary instead as a treat. In fact almost all the series I'm currently watching have disappeared over the Chrimbo season :-( Sorry if this message appears twice. My cat climbed onto the laptop in the previous one and the message I was composing disappeared, don't know if it got sent or not ;-) Sarah |

Why is it that people who own DVDs of a particular TV programme seem to prefer watching it as a TV broadcast, even though it may be edited and peppered with adverts? Is it the sense of community, of knowing that people in a few thousand other households are watching at the same time? Or does the mere fact that it's being shown on a national TV station provide a sense of occasion? I must say that the sense of a communal experience has largely gone out of TV in the UK; very few TV programmes these days attract a huge audience in the way that used to be the case when I was growing up in the late '60s and '70s. At Christmas especially, when we'd all sit back and watch the Morecambe and Wise Christmas special on BBC1, there was a sense that you were part of a huge audience that just doesn't happen when you watch a DVD. These days, TV programmes have to compete with the playstation, the Internet, the DVD player, 40 other digital TV channels and their own repeat on BBC3 a few days later. Something has been lost. Apart from a few minutes here and there when I've just strayed onto ITV4 and there's an ITC show on I've hardly caught any of the broadcasts (apart from the little seen "The Adventurer"). Old transfers, cut for timing, on screen logos, commercial breaks in the wrong places, squashed end credits and voice-overs - I mean what is the point? Surely everyone here has the DVDs? As you say James, it must simply be a case of the community spirit of watching a TV broadcast - albeit a vastly inferior one. OK, rant over. May I wish everyone a very happy Christmas and all the best for 2006! |

I record it as I do for any broadcast in order to FF through the commercial breaks, so I'm not sharing any sense of "commnity spirit", although I do like to think that there may be viewers out there new to the series that are enjoying the ITV 4 broadcasts, maybe seeing Ed, Mike, George, Gabrielle, Dolores, Wanda et al, for the very first time in the best sci-fi series ever made :-) I've posted about each episode because I thought other list members might be interested to know what was shown; what edits were made and what the picture quality was like. Obviously wrong about that :-( I don't watch much television and most of what I do tends to be treated in UFO fashion on terrestrial channels. Perhaps there's an element to "watching" UFO because it costs so much money to subscribe to cable, in order to watch the handful of current series I do want to see and it helps me to think I'm getting my "moneys worth" ;-) I'm going to listen to Mike and Alan's commentary now........ Happy holidays to everyone on the list Sarah |

I have to admit, it's more on cable in the States, but I've watched my share of things I own on tape or DVD over the years. I think there's also a sense that the broadcasters are sharing in the appreciation of the show/movie. It's nice to have the individual's judgement about an entertainment validated by tptb? and sometimes it's just easier to turn it on and have it run on the tv than to make the effort to make a choice and slide in a disk ... don't feel so guilty about walking out of the room or doing two things at once either. (so, there are those of us who are a little strange in the brain on this list ...) <<<<> I'm glad I'm not the only one that's been puzzled! While the current price is a good one for what you receive, $80 is a lot of money and there are other things i need more than i need UFO DVDs .. (I know, sacrilige! <strikes long suffering pose and spoils it by giggling>) Hope everyone had a good Christmas and has a wonderful 2006 (good heavens, is it that late already???) laters dragon --------------------------------- Yahoo!
