It would have predated the X-files by some 20 years. >> Hmmm. I like the surreal, bizarre, atmospheric episodes (i.e., Mindbender, Timelash, CwTL, Psychobombs, Reflections in the Water, and even TMWCB). I love sci-fi and I enjoy these eps for their eerie sci-fi feel. Timelash is my fave ep. On the other hand, I also very much like the more dramatic and/or techy eps (i.e., Court Martial, Conflict, Kill Straker, Close-up, etc.). I'm very much a fan of good characterization, and UFO succeeds admirably in this area. I don't analyze the show too closely because I simply want to enjoy what UFO is presenting. I don't mind if the science isn't correct or if the plotting is a little stale...as long as it tells me a story I can get lost in. UFO does this for me. (Well, except for Ordeal; "it was all a dream" hits my squick button.) :) So, for me, it doesn't matter what direction the show went in. I enjoyed it all. As I recall, when UFO was first shown here (in '72, I think) it was very popular. Despite poor reviews it did extremely well in the ratings. I was surprised and disappointed when it didn't return for a second season. I must confess, however, that on first viewing, my main attraction to the show was the presence the stunning Commander Straker. <g> [hidden email] writes: << Since we're talking about The Long Sleep, I'll add the Aliens looked like clowns playing tag for the bomb fuse, when they should have easily handled our high flying pair. Who was on drugs? >> I agree with you here. "The Long Sleep" is my least favorite ep and not one I watch very often. I said earlier that I don't anlayze the eps. Well, this one is the exception. There is just TOO much wrong. Aside from the aging thing and the whole dumb bomb thing, my biggest gripe was with the major breech of security. This was a public, non-military hospital. Yet Straker shows up, being called "Commander" by Dr. Jackson and Col. Lake. And what was Dr. Jackson doing there to begin with? Is he on staff at that hospital? Did he just suddenly walk in and say, "I'm taking over her case."? Don't get me wrong, I adore Dr. Jackson (he's my second fave character). It just seemed so..."formula" to have him there. Also, it made to teeth grind to see Col. Foster grab the syringe from Straker and give him orders. For me, this is just a really bad ep. IMHO, of couse. :) Carol K Still torn between Straker and Avon Yuchtar, Yuchtar, Yuchtar...what am I going to do with you? I see you still have an itchy finger on that flamer. Hi Lisa! |

Is he on staff at that hospital? I think that she had already, naturally been taken to a non-military hospital, and it might have created a more difficult security situation to move her from there. When Straker turns up at the hospital the first thing he asks Jackson is whether the security is acceptable. So although I agree with you about the logic of the episode as a whole I don't really have a problem with the hospital. I'm sure that the necessary strings could have been pulled to allow SHADO to take over a small part of the hospital. I'm sure that hospitals do, in real life, have to hand over security to a particular room to the police or the military from time to time. James |
