Lorraine Meyer's Convention Photos!

Marc Martin
Administrator
Hi all,

Lorraine Meyer has e-mailed me 57 photos she took at Fanderson's
recent "Stand By For Action" convention, and I have temporarily
uploaded them all to the following directory:

http://ufoseries.com/sbfa/lorraineMeyer

Note that the file names are mine, and may not be entirely correct,
since I wasn't there! The one's named "regHillCloset..." are
apparently things that Reg Hill's wife found in their closet (!).
Also, it appears that modelmaker Alan Shubrook gave a slide show.

These will remain in this directory for a bit, so copy them if you want them!

Thanks Lorraine!

These are really great photos ! Thanks, Lorraine !

I don't know about what's in the photos, but a tweedy guy
called 'Hugo' from Sotheby's showed off some items going up for
auction for massive megabucks there shortly - including some original
artwork for the 'Captain Scarlet' end credits which had been in Reg's
bedroom cupboard for the last 30 or 40 years. If they hadn't been
hdden away, apparently - framed on Reg's wall, say - they would have
faded, and as it was were in pristine condition.

> Also, it appears that modelmaker Alan Shubrook gave a slide show.

Yes, a fascinating talk ! (At the risk of being OT - if so censor
this message - one story from it);

Alan talked about the very start of his career. He had answered a
press advert looking for model makers for 'Century 21', and on
telling them of his total lack of experience of model-making on a
commercial basis, had been shown the door. However, he had (for fun)
made a model of the house of his friend and actress Hayley Mills,
which he showed a photo of to the con (the model, not the house). On
showing the model to Mike Trim, who presumably had been designated to
show him the door, Mike did a double-take, then disappeared... only
to re-appear with another fellow, who Alan took to be the real heavy
to show him the door, but was in fact Derek Meddings... Mike and
Derek looked at the model, and asked some questions, after which they
disappeared... presumably, Alan concluded, to find someone else to
show him the door ! ... only to re-emerge, for Derek to ask, how soon
he could start work for them ?!? (the model, or its picture, were
very impressive).

> These will remain in this directory for a bit, so copy them if you
want them!

The same goes for any files posted by myself - people can use them
however they want, for whatever they want, without any worries
regarding copyright - wouldn't have posted them without wanting them
to be used (and, especially, enjoyed <g>)...

Second that !

Fanderson Convention photos

Charlie & Lorraine-2
Andy, I am glad you enjoyed the photos. We have to thank Marc for taking the
time to put them in a directory too! I wish I had brought my camera to the
dance Sat but I didn't want to harass the guests there. I think each time I
go I have certain regrets about things I failed to do (let's just say things
I would have done differently). Well, I guess that is what the NEXT
convention is for...to make sure I do things right. :)

As far as meeting up with each other, I think Marc's comments regarding
posting photos before we head to the convention so that we can all look for
each other are right on target. In retrospect, I wish we had planned a
meeting at a particular time (even though there were just a few of us). It is
hard to pre-plan a time to meet when you look at that schedule. Perhaps the
bar area at 8pm next time...something like that? Or dinner at the nearby Elms
pub at a certain time? At least it would narrow down the field a bit. I could
NOT believe how many people were in the main lecture hall when I arrived
(slightly late as usual) on Sat morning. Quite honestly, I was stunned. Marc
is right...staring at the name tags doesn't work. It can be embarrasing as
well because we ladies tend to place our name tags in an awkward place to
stare at! :)

I have a third of my convention report done but after two days work I am
fighting to stay awake. The plan is to finish it this weekend. No word from
anyone yet who might be able to supply me with a video of Alan Shubrook's
lecture or Ed and Francis' interview to transcribe. I do agree with Denise
that you sort of "had to be there" to get the real feeling for what was going
on but, just like in many other cases, it is better to have something (a
transcription) than nothing. I still think if we could make a video snippet
of that "kiss" between Ed and Francis and post it, it would be great.

Thanks for explaining about the Reg Hill items. I understood that the models
displayed were found in his closet as well (by his wife). One was described
as a 1967 Dinky toy model made of wood. The auction house was Christies and
the date of the auction is July 11th. I wasn't clear as to whether they were
all to be auctioned as one lot or if the posters were one lot and the models
another. Does anyone recall? I do agree that they are going to be asking
megabucks for them. Did anyone ask the amount the auctioned items were going
to start at? Does anyone have any better pics of them? (I didn't know they
put them in the exhibition area later in the day so my photos are from when
they carried them around the room).

I understand that Alan Shubrook had photos for sale? Did anyone
buy these? Is there any way for those of us who did not attend
to still buy these?

Marc, Charlie and I don't recall him saying he had photos for sale. He just
said he didn't mind anyone taking pictures of them on the screen. I wasn't
there for the entire talk and charlie left for a little while so it is
possible that we missed that comment. I don't recall seeing any of his
photos for sale in the sales room.

I have the details for this (or rather I will by the end of tomorrow) - let
me know if I can help.

I think several folks on this list might be interested in the details about
what UFO photos are available from Alan, and contact information for more
information/ordering.

I just hope that the pictures (and even a film item,
of the futuristic cars arriving at the 'Century 21'
studios - what a contrast they present, modern even by
today's standards, compared with the 'clunkers'
sitting in their car park !) - are preserved for
posterity. Alan Shubrook's photos are a unique source
of otherwise unpreserved material. What is most
interesting, perhaps, is that the reason he took the
photos - the arrival of a Russian delegation to see
the 'Century 21' Studios, for example, or a Russian
helicopter overflying the Studios in connection with
that - fade into insignificance compared with the fact
that these are the only extant record of what 'Century
21' studios looked like !
A unique archive, which hopefully will be recorded
more widely for posterity (rather than simply falling
into the hands of individual collectors), which I am
sure Alan would prefer.
BTW (esp. Lorraine, but anyone else interested); I do
actually have a micro-cassette recording of Alan's
talk, and it is (reasonably) clearly audible; but
without the photos it was based on, is somewhat like
eating a sandwich complete with its plastic wrapper -
it has all the essentials, but lacks flavour somehow
:^

Ideally, someone (with the right connections) would
make contact with Alan, and record both his
recollections, and scan his photo and video record.
(I'd be happy to do it, if someone could set that up
?).

A great session of the con !

Andy

I spoke to Alan last Saturday, and suggested that he writes a book - fully
illustrated with all his pics. He said that it wasn't out of the question,
but he has only just realised that there is such an interest in his pics and
his stories - he has hundreds! Hopefully someone in Fanderson can persuade
him to write a book, and I'll be writing to him this week to try and jolly
things along!

Some of his pics have appeared in print before - I certainly recognised some
of them

I'll give you more details when I have access to the catalogue he produced
(after I've been to a screening of The Wicker Man with the director). As far
as I can remember he's willing to produce standard 10x8s (usually BW, as at
that time most people didnt use colour photography) for a reasonable price.
Also he has produced some very limited compilation images by each series he
worked on - Stingray through to UFO - at about £15-20 each. They did look
good. There are only 50 of each, and they're quite big. He had a deal to buy
a complete series for over £100....

As I mentioned I'll be writing to him this week. If you want messages passed
on I will do that - if you would like me to act as a go between (perhaps
amassing a large order from interested parties in the group) I can do...

Yeah, his photos were featured in the last issue of Sci-Fi & Fantasy
Modeller, which also featured a lenghty interview with him.

Do you think he might be willing to have some of them
scanned for use with the text of his 'Fanderson' talk,
for publication on the Internet ?

I will pass on that idea. I know he wasnt bothered about people taking pics
of his pics at the event.

He is selling around 25-30 8x6 photos at £3 each. I will endeavour to scan
in the brochure listing for UFO and post it in the files section. He is also
producing six 16x12 framed posters of several images, limited edition of 50,
for £120 in total or £29 each. There is one UFO poster, the others are
Anderson shows.
