Loss of Columbia

The loss of the shuttle is very sad .To say its brave to hitch a ride on what is in effect a flying bomb,is an under statement.It just convinces me of the determination and enthusiasm of the astronauts involved. That they felt the final benefits to be gained were greater than the sum of their loss.

During Close Up Commander Straker says to Kelly.Your looking in the wrong direction Kelly..SPACE that's where you should turn your talents.Its an Irony we should be discussing that episode now.Determination and enthusiasm
ending in a simple yet spectacular failure.
The romance and confidence of Space exploration evident when UFO was made has long since disappeared. Millions of Dollars and inumerable amounts of training and talent is required to overcome every conceivable problem .This latest disaster will no doubt fuel the objections of
detractors of the Space project.And lets be honest..they do have a point.Thankfully we have an indominatable spirit to conquer,and despite the logic of the detractors nothing can overcome a fathomless inner compulsion to reach out beyond our normal boundaries.The vastness of space invites us,no! demands us to explore its mysteries.
Its is perhaps a strange truth that when we search for answers mankind has always stared at or invoked the magnificence of the heavens.
I think it important,that like President Reagan after the Challenger disaster,President Bush should again link,God, meaning and human truth against a background of cold science to the artistic and overwhelming presence of the firmament.

With respect, Mark, I feel I need to disagree on that point. The romance
surrounding space exploration is still quite evident. If a problem exists
it can be found in the way space exploration is handled and funded.
