That's an interesting line up George. I'm not familiar with most of them, but Brent Spiner would be a little old for the Foster part. He's also not British. Of the main characters only Straker was "American". If it was to be remade, I'd like to see it pretty close to the original. Some of the best parts were the outdoor scenes in England. IMHO. Anyway.

Lyn, thanks for your comments. I appreciate them immensely.
Arliss Howard and Jack Laufer worked together in a made-for-TV movie from 1996, "The Man Who Captured Eichmann", so I am familiar with them, at least, in my memory. In regard to who could play Col. Paul J. Foster, I'm open for suggestions. I have got to get the whole series on DVD. I can still recall watching UFO when I was nine or ten years of age. lynchambers2002 <[hidden email]> wrote: That's an interesting line up George. Well the obvious suggestions for people to play Foster would be any of the
actors who were up for being the new James Bond before Daniel Craig too the role. Off hand I can think of Clive Owen, Olando Bloom, Gerard Butler(my personal pick) and Rufus Sewell(anyone know if this guy is related to George?) ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com. I'm American so the casting would be a bit more centric, and I'm not
too familiar with many of the British TV actors and actresses Straker - Craig Bierko (former regular on "Boston Legal") Freeman - Robert Picardo (hologram doctor from "Star Trek: Voyager") Foster - Mark Valley (also of "Boston Legal", both he and Bierko played really well off each other as foils) Ellis - Robin Tunney (currently on "Prison Break", was the lead character in "End of Days") Henderson - Randy Quaid (he was simply fantastic as 'Colonel' Tom Parker in a made for TV movie about Elvis) Jackson - Henry Goodman (played the Russian physicist in "The Saint") Lake - Parminder Nagra ("Bend it Like Beckham" and "ER") SID - Leonard Nimoy ('nuff said) Miss Ealand - Karyn Parsons (played Will Smith's cousin on "Fresh Prince of Bel Air") Ayshea - Rachel Specter (okay... I have no basis for this other than she's just eye candy) Ford - D.B. I always thought the David Caruso (spelling?) from NYPD BLUE and CSI would make a great Straker or at least a great Straker-esque leader to follow in his footsteps in SHADO's top job. I know he's a red-head, but he has that intense, broody quality and the voice...he's one of the only actors I've seen in the last decade or so who has the qualities of an Ed Straker type.
Edward James Olmos was another actor I once thought would make a decent SHADO Commander, because, let's face it, half of UFO's paranoid mood and atmosphere comes from the acting style of Ed Bishop...he conveys just the right amount of moody, edgey, dangerous intensity. David Caruso or Edward James Olmos...they could do a SHADO leader with the right air of moody/dangerous. If it was a feature film, Morgan Freeman with a bit of a short temper could do it. Gay knew that she was attractive, but at work she wanted to be admired for her capabilities. Dating Mark was OK because she didn't feel the need to impress him. He could step back from his work, and appreciate Gay for herself. Ed wanted a part of his life to be like that, but felt that he had to commit his entire being to the cause. Would he liked to have a relationship with Gay? You Bet! But having your boss tell you how he considers you an attractive woman in a work setting was just plain creepy for her. > Her character had a pretty uneasy relationship with Straker. There seemed to be some undercurrents of both attraction and resentment> Richard: Exactly! Ed seemed to always say just the wrong thing around her. The fact was she DID feel that to prove that she was as good as a man that she had to perform better than them. Rather than telling her that that this view was wrong, Ed should have told her how much he admired her determination, and dedication. If Ed ever took the opportunity to attend a social occasion where she would be at, then he would be in the proper setting to tell her that he thought that she was a MAJOR FOX. (Wasn't that Ed's name is Twilight's last gleaming?) Gay could seperate work from the rest of her life and may have accepted Ed's advances then. She admired him for his work, but there was still more hidden underneath. > Is she a bit nasty in that practical joke she and Kelly pull with the zoom-in on her thigh? Or is it just that Straker isn't very good and dealing with the opposite sex? > Richard: She knew that Ed's first love was Shado, and she had no intention of being a mistress. Although Ed never intended them so, his comments made her feel like her work capabilities were being ignored. Something that wouldn't have been overlooked if she had been a man. She thought "Straker" could only see her as a great pair of legs, and great pair of something else. She didn't want her boss to see her as a pin-up. If Commander Straker knew how to address Lt. Ellis like a collegue, then Ed might have ended up tearing up the sheets with Gay. That moment could happen in a new series or a feature movie. But once again, he would end up feeling forced to choose between Ed Straker and Commander Straker. |

I really like the idea of David Caruso as Straker! I agree with Zerg Harry
that he can project that broody quality! I also nominate Canadian singer Jimmy Rankin as Paul Foster - he looks considerably like Mike Billington did during the original UFO series. I like Edward James Olmos but he doesn't have the look for Straker... Pam the Canuck P.S. so sorry to hear about George Sewell...... [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
The reason why we like the idea of David Caruso, is because Horatio
Caine IS Commander Straker! Zerg Harry; You absolutely nailed it! Richard --- In [hidden email], Pamela McCaughey <mccaug@...> wrote: > > I really like the idea of David Caruso as Straker! He's just plain creepy. An old man trying to be an action hero, and dating the far younger sister of one of his underlings, yeek!... I'd like to see Gary Oldman play either Straker, or maybe Dr Jackson. Maybe E James Olmos as Straker w/ Oldman as Jackson would be the combo. Oldman is good at the scary taste of psychopathy type of guys.... and just for a gag, have Steven Van Zant (Sopranos' Bada Bing bar owner) play Straker's 2nd in command Col Freeman.... Too bad they couldn't have scanned the origional acters and then have digital clones of them playing the parts again ala Final Fantasy. That's the ultimate solution. JMVOATUBAEO, I'll shut up now.... Yes I felt Zerg Harry (am I writing that correctly?) was sooo right about
Caine being so like Straker, broody, dedicated to his work and incidentally losing his wife (to death not to divorce). I like the qualities David Caruso brings to Caine. Straker is a unique character because back when UFO originally aired, not too many heros were like him. The closest one might come in comparison was Steve McGarrett of Hawaii 5-0 (Jack Lord) who incidentally was approached by Gene Roddenberry to consider playing Kirk in the original Trek series. Wouldn't that have been odd? In more recently years you do see the occasional Straker-type guy but Caine is the closest I can think of. Straker was a by the book kind of guy too, and alot of today's heroes are 'loose cannons' who flout the rules and the law constantly (Crossing Jordan for instance which I no longer watch as it has so obviously "Jumped the Shark"). Straker to me was believable, and to a great degree so is Caine - at least in his personal qualities. Pam the Canuck |

Just had to chime in again - I don't find Caruso creepy - but I don't find EJ Olmos a good suggestion for Freeman - he plays too broody for Freeman who seems to have none of the characteristics of Straker - in fact one wonders just HOW two such disparate people became good buds. The Final Fantasy suggestion was definitely interesting - but alas not possible. Pam the Canuck [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

I've seen that a bunch lately: "Jump the shark". What does that exactly
mean? If it's in reference to Fonzi jumping over a shark on Happy Days and the fortelling demise of a show, then how can we explain that Happy Days had about 100 more episodes after that one? Just a thought. ____________________________________________________________________________________ 8:00? 8:25? 8:40? Find a flick in no time with the Yahoo! "Jumping the Shark" usually refers to some point in a television series where a good show becomes a bad show. And yes, it does refer to a specific episode of "Happy Days". As for UFO, I don't think it ever "jumped the shark", although some people may choose a Pinewood Studios episode (e.g. Reflections in the Water?) Marc |

I was reading a magazine the other day and found the perfect Alec
Freeman!!His name is Stephen Frye a british actor--who resembles George Sewell. I would have Jennifer Ellison(British model and actress)play Gay Ellis.I of course would play Mark Bradley(lol--I wish!!)seriously Mark Bradley would be Tyson Beckford .Shadow Operative Ayshea would be played by Scary Spice(Melanie Brown) and Joan Harrington would be Ginger Spice(Geri Halliwell--although I was and am still in love with Antonia Ellis because of her fiesty attitude towards Straker!!).General Henderson would be played by retired Senator from Texas Fred Thompson.Ed Straker would be Hugh Jackman from Ex-Men(Wolverine).Mary would be Kate Winslet. And as Paul Foster it would be Billy Zane.Captain Peter Carlin would be Either Freddie Prinze Jr. or Mario Lopez(from Saved by the bell).Keith Ford would be????Any help with this one?? This would be the line up and acceptable to me.David Caruso to me(personal opinion-don't shoot me ha-ha)couldn't fitinto the role of Ed Straker--no where near Ed Bishop!!I'm not a hater, thats just a factual opinion!Leave him on CSI or reruns of NYPD Blue!! Did anyone revamp the vehicles used in the show(update them)??Sky-diver(and sky 1), Interceptors,Straker and Fosters cars(they would hopefully look like the car used in the movie that Will Smith did "I-Robot",I believe that was an Audi),The Mobiles and all the planes?? Look were moving right along and hopefully Mark Martin has connections to get all of "US"fans a shot at UFO getting on Sci-Fi just like Galactica with the excellent scrips, but without the change of genders for characters and colors--keep them how we remember them(StarBuck is a girl now and Boomer is a asian girl--both of those characters are men!Etc.) Hopefullly the powers that be will give us what we ask for and make this a "GO"on production!!?? Horatio Caine would give me the creeps as a boss or even as a dinner guest. There is a lack of emotion expressed, and something hidden in the background that he is not telling. A tragic past brought he to where he is today. David Caruso could never be an Ed Bishop. But he could be an compelling Ed Straker. Thompson was actually the senator from Tennessee. Tennessee, Texas...
there's almost no difference, except that in Tennessee the family tree tends to have few branches. (I'm joking, of course). There is actually a website www.jumpingtheshark.com I believe is the address
and I have been on it to check it out. Yes, the term does refer back to an eps of Happy Days and no I don't think UFO jumped the shark unless you count the eps The Cat With 10 Lives! Tons of shows have jumped the shark, Crossing Jordan, CSI: Miami, CSI: NY and others unfortunately. I think a show should end at a high point, not be permitted to get worse and worse until even the one time fans are glad to see it die. I know this is OT, but I read just recently that an X-Files movie is in the works to pick up where the series finale ended 4 yrs ago - yipee! Pam the Canuck .
