MOONHOPPERS

I've just been on the Fab Gear website and they have some amazing stuff. I just wish I had the disposable cash!! One thing though, have the UFO "moonhoppers" ever been available to buy? I'm not even sure if that's the correct name for these vehicles, but they can been seen in some episodes hovering over the surface of the moon and blowing up dust!

FYI:
It's a very expensive set and the bulk of its contents were released as
separate items the year before. The new SHADO vehicles in the set were
the Shadair Mobile Transporter Aircraft and the Moon Mobile. However,
they're both incredibly small. While the detail and contour accuracy is
phenomenal for these toys/ models, the Moon Mobile is barely 1.5 inches
in length, with many of the other items being of similar size. Also, the
bulk of the set is comprised of various dioramas. (Interceptor launch
silos etc).
I preordered the set before its release and suffered buyer's remorse
when it arrived - Mainly due to the tiny, 'Micro-Machines' size of the
individual vehicles.

How would you feel if you bought Japanese laserdiscs set? : )

I have to say that I am pretty happy with Konami Ultimate UFO Collection, although the vehicles are indeed tiny, to say the least. But, that's only me, I like even the UFO Technical Manual that nobody else seems to like : )

FYI:

I had no buyers remorse from buying the Japanese UFO laserdiscs...
after all, it took almost a decade for the Carlton UFO DVDs to
come out and make those laserdiscs obsolete.

Of course, spending US$1000 on the entire series on laserdisc
seems pretty absurd when today you can probably find a new copy
of the entire series on DVD for only US$20.

I'm glad you are happy with the Konami UFO collection - Many collectors
love the set.
My only intent was to accent the miniature size of the vehicles so that
another fan could make an informed decision if they were thinking of
buying the set for the Moon Mobile alone.
Ah, the laserdisks... I remember seeing episodes played on them at a
friend's place when they first came out. It's tragic how short a life
span certain types of technology had... I still have a top of the line
Beta HiFi video player in perfect working order... I now use it as a
digital clock...

Hi All,
I bought most of the Konami models (UFO/Thunderbirds/Capt Scarlet etc.)and while I admit they are small they are very detailed and have the advantage of being able to display a large number of models in a fairly small space.
Sadly these are no longer available except on ebay but I bought mine from www.hlj.com (Hobby Link Japan) which only cost £15.00 for a box of 10 and even with the postage of about £8.00 (from Japan to UK) my only regret isnot buying more boxes!!

Did you really pay $1000 for the entire series of UFO on laserdisc? I remember seeing laserdiscs in Holland in the early 90s, and at first glanceI thought they were LPs!

Well no... I think it was closer to US$1200, actually...
those laserdiscs were RARE and EXPENSIVE...

I'm not sure how many were actually manufactured, but it must have
been a fairly small number.

Actually, I like the A&E UFO DVDs better than the
Carlton's, as the speed is "correct".

Also, the HDTV versions are certainly interesting,
although in some aspects the DVDs are better.

I have to admit I don't have A&E UFO box set, but I am used to PAL speed and it could be awkward to hear/see the real speed : )

Also, PAL has better resolution and usually better colors, so I am perfectly content with Carlton set. It upscales so good onPS3, I don't think real HD could be THAT much better... Having in mind that ITV will probably release cropped 16:9 version with unstable colors and contrast, Carlton set seemscloser and closer to perfection.

True, although one problem with all the DVDs is video compression
artifacts. I just think the episodes need more than 2GB to look
their best. And "The Prisoner" on Blu-ray uses 8GB per episode...

Several of my friends and I wanted to get those damn laserdiscs but  
we never could afford them (even by pooling our resources)...also the  
Thunderbirds Lasers too...just cost too much money back then. I still  
think that those who have them are gods ;-)

Or financially irresponsible... :-)

I also remember buying the Today Home Entertainment
VHS tapes in the 1980's at their original price,
which was around $80 per 2 episodes on VHS tape.

Marc, now you can glue those VHS tapes together into two big bricks
for bookends to hold up the Laserdiscs ;-)

Fo those who dont know the prices of Laserdiscs, let me give you some
examples. This is US dollars of course :)

I used to purchase my LD's either mail order or from a local store that had
good prices on LD's.

One Star Trek LD, which contains just two episodes, one on each side cost me
brand new $33 or $16.50 a episode. There are 26 episodes to UFO. So if I
was able to purchase the episodes like I did star Trek, it would cost me
$429, but these are Japanese imports we are talking about, not something
produced for the us market.

A standard movie on laser cost about $30-$40, box sets with extras, more.
But here are some japanese lasers I own.

Star Wars I, The Phantom Manace $100 (would you believe I still never opened
it? :)
Godzilla vs King Ghidorah $100
Song of the South $65

Song of the South is old, used a old print, but I am sure the others used
prestine prints, at least the Godzilla one does, not opening Star Wars :)

I would say doubling the price, at least, would sound right when purchasing
these brand new. With shipping, conceivable, yes maybe as much as a $1000.
Secondary market, used, collectors item, before the DVD sets came out,
$1200+ doesnt sound crazy at all.

But I can understand Marc's obsession. I am not a star wars fan, but
besides the above mentioned import I have, I also have two box sets. These
both had only the first three movies each. Remember Lucas remastered it
with new fx??

The same thing that the lunar lander, the real thing from the Apollo missions, used to take off of the lunar surface, but with computers controlling power so it could hover and use other jets to push it.

I'm not a "Star Wars" fan either. I've always despised the big Hollywood blockbuster style of sci-fi ("Close Encounters" and "Independence Day" are two of the worst offenders). I prefer my sci-fi to be of high quality like "The Andromeda Strain" (original), "Phase IV" and "The Forbin Project." I highly recommend these films.
