Any ideas. This is very easy to address.Quite simply UFO is set in an alternative and parallell universe where Space Travel is more like extended conventional air travel, with some additional but not hugely technical requirements (this is how I perceived it quite naturally when I watched it as a child aged 12 and see no reason to see things any differently). In fact if you look at it this way,it becomes more acceptable, more credible. This world in many ways is how Gerry Anderson thought it would be in the future,so it cannot be anything but an alter world (a projection).Space travel was seen as a mere stepping stone.Racism would not exist, the streets were not clogged with traffic.Populations were low, people were all pretty well off, healthy and good looking flourishing in a bondesque universe. However the stories of human "but, sanitised" conflict still remained. It was a world inhabited by people who were threatened with an Alien menace, but without all the ugly complicated bits that are exhibited in the general background of our present Western democratic societies. UFO is a combination of fantasy, glamour, menance, invention, imaginative stories (even if at times a little suspect) and a wonderfully original concept. Here's something to think about. Physicist Joao Magueijo proposed the
notion of Variable Speed of Light, going so far as to suggest there are naturally-occuring strings along which the speed of light itself is a million-fold faster than in normal space. A spacecraft could latch onto one of these strings and accelerate to - say, SOL 1 million (or whatever) without violating any of the laws of physics, because technically the spacecraft is still going SLOWER than the speed of light. It's the speed of light itself that's increased. I find this way of doing it appealing, inasmuch as you're not trying to boost a heavy object (an Alien UFO) through an impossible barrier with all the difficulties that that suggests. You don't need a huge, ultra-powerful propulsion system (and after all, the UFOs are not actually all that big) and you can get from, say, Alpha Centauri to Sol in a matter of weeks. Acceleration and deceleration would still be a technical problem, however, which might explain the unEarthly, high-tech metals used to make the UFOs and - of course - the cushioning fluid used in the suits to protect the Aliens from the tremendous acceleration/deceleration at each end of the journey. Food for thought, anyway. --- In [hidden email], "naughtyhector" <rod.mitchell@...> wrote: > > > This is very easy to address.Quite simply UFO is set in an > alternative and parallell universe > > Yes, it's called Television land! > > Regards, > Barry > |
