Methods to watch UFO

Griff
Hi All :)

Compared with many classic TV series, we UFO fans are really quite lucky as Gerry Anderson and his team decided to film UFO using 35mm film (compared with 16mm and other formats of the time) coupled with fact that the BBC did a simply outstanding job of film restoration and video mastering for us all to enjoy. Other productions have not been so lucky.

Anyway, the BIG question is, "How do I watch UFO?"

If you are like me, I am always busy doing work or something, and its increasingly hard to get time to watch my beloved UFO. Of course, one could just sit and relax, pop in a UFO DVD and trust that all with leave you alone for the 50 minutes or so, but does that ever happen? I am lucky, my wife doesn't 'get' UFO at all, okay can't stand it! But at least she cares enough to leave me in peace when I watching...

So, over the past year or so, I have been researching the best and easiest way to transfer 26 episodes into a format or formats that will allow me to practically have UFO with me wherever I go. I could go into the myriads of formats, compressions, Mac/PC, etc. and all that techie stuff... but I won't.

I use Windows PC's and Macs, and I'm not going to go into all that either, but what it does mean is that I require a format (one format) that will play on both PCs and Macs, my iPod/s, mobile cell phone, USB storage stick that I can plug into most TV's nowadays etc.

Conclusions, in short:-

- Save the UFO episodes as MPEG4 at 320 x 240 resolution if you only ever want to watch via iPods, Sony PSP's and mobile devices (cellphones etc.) It works out at about 294-340MB per episode, so it is easily possible to have ALL 26 episodes on a 16GB microSD card with room to spare (try to get AT LEAST Class 6) which is compatible with nearly all mobile devices. In this format it is even watchable 'in a window' on a PC/Mac or even plugged into a digital camera that can record and play movies.

- Save the UFO episodes as MPEG4 at 640 x 480 (or higher at the expense of size) if you only ever want to watch via iPod Touch, Higher end video playback devices (Archos, Sony, Digital TV, iTunes player, PC and Mac video players, etc.)

Done!

So now there are NO excuses why you cannot watch UFO with great sound where and whenever you want!

But - I hear you ask - "How do I get those episodes from my pristine but well watched set of DVD's?? They're copy protected."

No problem. There are many software titles that will 'grab' video and sound from DVD's, but nearly all are rubbish, buggy, or will attempt to load your computer with c**p.

I have tried over 30 (free and paid for) such pieces of software (not just in the interests of UFO), and without ANY hesitation, I would recommend ImTOO DVD Ripper (3 versions available) and I have no doubt at all that this is the easiest, most reliable, bug-free, versatile and bomb-proof piece of software to do the task (PS, I have no affiliation at all with the vendor).

So, after all that, I have ALL 26 episodes of UFO on my cellphone (great quality video and sound), that I can also play on my iPod, PC, Mac, and I can even keep them all on a USB Flash Drive where ever I go.

Sure, there is a legal issue here, but my view is I legitimately bought the DVDs, and this process just transferred the medium in which I choose to watch them, in exactly the same way that folks buy CD's and then stick the contents on their iPod... I have and would never endorse lending, distributing or otherwise stealing copyright products - music or video.

After 40 years, I can now catchup with UFO when and wherever I want... Sheer Bliss!

Best to all :)

Griff

Griff - Marvelous essay on conversion.

As an aside, if you just want to put the eps on your PC and have no need to
put them on a smaller device or change formats - DVD-Decrypter works very
nicely. Not bloatware. And I can use my DVD capture software on the results.

Well, no, I was actually gonna point out that I have none of those
mobile devices, but this is a good question, so I'll hush up a moment
and listen some more. Sssshhhhhhh .....
