Well Marc, the first thing I,d say is your absolutely right, not all the models they built were the same.In fact I,ve determined there were probably around 10 different variations.I say variations, because the essential design was the same. The variations were dimensional. That not only means there were different sizes of the model, but that each size had other variations as well. Its hard to tell if these variations were deliberate or accidental especially if the models were made by different model makers.
Four different aspects caused the model to appear different
in different episodes.Size, individual model variation, angle of view and most important of all Lighting.Central to lighting was the actual model's finish. As Derek Meddings said himself the UFO was covered with highly reflective tape.No commercially available model has ever had this chrome finish.Combine this with errors in the design and you can understand why I feel all the commercially available models are inaccurate. The model produced by Martin Bowers (unquestionably a brilliant model maker) is (it has to be said) nothing short of a parody,a supremely constructed parody, but a parody none the less.
You may think that its less than modest of me to say this.
However as a child I was obsessed with this model it fascinated me that much that I was determined to find out everything about it.This has been helped considerably with the release of the DVD,s.
Its for all these reasons that I believe (again not very modestly) that the model I,ve built is the most accurate.
But thats not the end of things.I intend to build all the variations in miniature and make lighting plans for producing all the differnt effects that Derek Meddings team acheived.
And if thats not obssesion I don,t know what is.
Regards Mark UK
