Hi all,
Hiroshi Ishizuka was able to get me a copy of the Japanese UFO soundtrack CD that was sold on that website for a limited time, and now apparently will be getting a wider distribution on Amazon.jp. The CD contains re-recorded versions of incidental music from UFO. If you're familiar with the fan-created UFO soundtrack CD that was distributed on this list in 1997 (and has been sold on eBay ever since), then you're familiar with the music that's on this CD. Apparently someone in Japan got their hands on that 1997 CD and decided to re-record it. So this means that there's a lot of music from IDENTIFIED, SURVIVAL, A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES, and not much else. This is a 2-CD release, however disc one is 38 minutes long and disc two is 37, for a grand total of 75 minutes. Besides the music from that fan CD, there are two additional tracks -- a re-recording of the Thunderbirds theme, which in the Japanese dubbed version of UFO was used for some of the interceptor launches. Also there is the UFO main title sequence used in Japan, complete with the original music plus a Japanese narration of the teletype. The jewel box artwork is nice enough, and it comes with a 12 page booklet featuring photos from UFO. The Carlton logo is present on this, and it LOOKS like a commercial CD, so I'm assuming that this is an officially licensed product. Over the years, I've certainly heard a lot of re-recordings of music from UFO, although 99% of this has simply been the main UFO theme song. It's interesting to hear re-recordings of other music from UFO. And these new versions aren't that bad, really. I'm just confused WHY they chose to re-record it all, when the original Barry Gray music exists. Also, it would have been nice if they'd re-recorded some of the music which no longer exists in its original form (like the intro drum solo on IDENTIFIED or half of the music from THE LONG SLEEP). But I guess it'd be more difficult to reproduce this without the original recordings to go by (although I'd think that simply listening to the music&effects track would be enough). Hiroshi said that he'd seen mostly negative comments about this CD, but I don't think it's all that bad. It's just that I think most people would prefer to hear the original versions... Marc |

I suppose the same question could be asked, "Why did the Dixie Chicks choose to rerecord Landslide?" Afterall, everyone knows, the Fleetwood Mac original is the only version worth listening to. The Dixie Chix are, well, mere blackholes in the music-space continuum. I suppose these electronic "Casio" remakes are novel, but nothing touches the Barry Gray originals. I am amused listening to the MP3s, but wouldn't spend money on the discs. Cheers, Bob --- In [hidden email], Marc Martin <marc@u...> wrote: > And these new versions aren't that bad, really. "Imagine a dying planet in some distant corner of the universe. Its natural resources exhausted. Its inhabitants sterile. Doomed to extinction. A situation we may one day find ourselves in, gentlemen. So they discover earth. Abundant, fertile. Able to satisfy their needs. They look upon us not with animosity, but callousness. As we look upon our animals that we depend on for food. Yes, it appears they are driven by circumstance across a billion miles of space, driven on by the greatest force in the universe - survival."

Hi all,
Okay, I've now made some scans of the new Japanese UFO soundtrack CD, and added them to my "music" page: http://ufoseries.com/music Marc |
