Hi all,
In my UFO DVD special features poll, one of the options I've listed
is a "music + effects" track. In case any of you don't know what
that is, this is a soundtrack which has all of the music & sound
effects from the episode, but no dialog. It is used to create
foreign-language dubbed versions of the episodes. I listed this as
an option because these tracks still exist today, and are fun because
you can hear the music & effects in more detail with the dialog gone.
Also, the source tapes seem to be higher quality than the regular
"English mix" track, which means you can appreciate the music &
effects even better.
As an example, here is a ten-minute excerpt from the music & effects
track for THE LONG SLEEP:

Unfortunately, the music volume levels goes up and down, just like
they do in the episode.
The "music + effects" track exists for many of the old Gerry Anderson
series, but for some reason the folks who produce the DVDs don't put
these in as a special feature. In fact, I've never seen this on any
DVD, so I guess the DVD makers don't think anyone would be
interested. And who knows, perhaps they're right! :-)
One of the other options I listed on the poll was a "music-only"
track. Unlike the music+effects track, a music-only track doesn't
exist for UFO, and would need to be constructed using audio tapes
from the collection of Barry Gray. I doubt that any video company
would be willing to go through the effort to create a UFO music-only
track for all 26 episodes, and I imagine that there might also be
some music-rights issues that prevent them from doing it all.
