Nasty MPEG Artifacts in COMPUTER AFFAIR

Hi all,

For those of you who are enjoying your UFO DVD's and do not
wish to hear any more quality nitpicks, please skip this message... :-)

(nit-picking mode on)

I watched COMPUTER AFFAIR on A&E's UFO DVD Set 1 yesterday, and
noticed some more "weird motion" MPEG artifacts. This one
was particularly distracting to me, and it occurred at 18 minutes
into the episode. It's a scene showing Skydiver rotating upwards
in preparation for a Sky One launch. The MPEG encoding actually
makes Derek Meddings good special effects work look really cheesy,
as it makes the Skydiver model look like a cardboard cutout which
has been stop-motion animated with uneven motion between the
fighter and the diver.

I checked this scene on the Carlton disc, but since I'm watching
an NTSC conversion of it I cannot make any definitive statements, but
it appears that it's got about the same problem here, but added
to it there's some sort of strange solarization effect (sharp
step function between green & blue areas in the ocean) in
the ocean background.

I then checked this scene on the Japanese laserdisc, which
doesn't have any weird motion artifacts or solarization, but
it certainly suffers from graininess & "murkiness".

So on my set and on my players and with my eyes, I guess the
A&E set is the least objectionable, but I'm sure the original
master tapes were far superior than the compressed MPEG-2
versions we're seeing on the DVDs.

Back to watching more episodes!
