Human nature is still >very much in its infancy. >Griff After CWTL,UFO developed a more sinister almost supernatural concept of who and what the Aliens were. Their very nature and the extent of the powers they possessed changed significantly. In the earlier episodes, they were straightforward extraterrestrial humanoids, however to the producer' credit they remained mysterious. They realised that an unknown and faceless threat always leads to more dramatic tension. There are three general theories about what UFO's and Aliens are.The first is the nuts and bolts argument, physical beings whether that be visitors from an extraterrestrial source or time travellers from some hypothetical future. Secondly they are dimensional or otherwordly manifestations.Existing, but on another plane of existence that touches our own. Some might even say it is a subconscious extension of the physical world (this is my preferred imaginative choice) Thirdly, there is the Psycho Social interpretation. The Sceptical scientific view that they are purposeful sophisticated hallucinations. UFO folklore is rich in all sorts of subjects such as psychic powers, supernatural effects, unearthly manifestatons, alien abduction, time distortion, rigid security, secrecy and coverups. For me the idea of dimensional beings somehow called forth or summoned as a result of our needs, feeding on our fears, challenging our intellects, acting irrationally, hitting our weak spots yet at other times attacking in a more classical style,is a better way to address why all of the above might occur. It could also be used explain all of the contradictions in the series itself, whilst also opening up a richer vein of further stories in the same way that CWTL tried to do. In no way do I suggest UFO change in its outward appearance.I am all for retaining the canon. In fact I do not even consider reading or taking an interest in fiction that attempts to alter or tinker with this in any way. Like you I also think of UFO existing in a kind of parallel universe, where technological and social development is different, defined by more accommodating natural laws (easier to re-enter earths atmosphere for example).Space travel is not such a complex process as in our world, but more akin to flying say a 747 from here to Australia.A more expensive business certainly, but essentially a small technological step up. The other question you raise concerns other life in the universe. All I can say is that I don't think a super technology would have time to develop to the point where interstellar travel would be possible.Something would slow down, halt or terminate the process. That's not to say they don't exist, but merely an objection as to why they might not. Purely as a side issue, there is also the modern scientific theory of The Weak Anthropic Principle WAP,which implies a powerful circumstantial argument against other Alien life forms existing. Its not that they might not exist, its just the fact that the size of the Universe is not evidence in itself that they do. Finally you also mention that you do not believe in UFO's or Aliens.Contrary to this I do believe in them.I think they are an undeniable fact. The real question is what are they are and what are they trying to do? And if anybody is seeking anything resembling a rational, meaningful and intelligent opinion on this question, all I can recommend is to read "Aliens, why are they here?" by the brilliant author and special features writer for the Sunday Times and other quality newspapers Bryan Appleyard. I only mention him because he is my favourite writer and co-incidentally decided to write (against all advice) a book about Aliens.
