New Fanderson UFO soundtrack CD?

Marc Martin
Administrator
Hi all,

Apparently in the latest issue of Fanderson's FAB magazine (which
I have not yet received), there is mention of a new version of
Fanderson's UFO soundtrack CD, with "quite a few surprises that
have been discovered since the original club release in 2003."

Hopefully we will learn more about this in the near future!

I am please to see this announced - I'm hoping that they have found some of the memorable cues missing from the original release - they were a number of missing bits...

Fanderson have missed another opportunity here: there was enough material not included on the original 2-disc release and the Supermarionation librarytracks to make this 40th anniversary release a new 3-disc edition.

And thereby producing a more expensive CD set that even less people could
afford?

Sometimes there has to be a balance between what people would like (and I
myself would love a 3 CD set, I have to say...) and economics.

RE: New Fanderson UFO soundtrack CD?

Branko
In reply to this post by Marc Martin

I read this yesterday on FSM message board:

The sales leaflet
says it's "totally redesigned and presented in a fresh new format, due
for release Nov 2009.....this new edition also includes quite a few
surprises that have been discovered since the original club release in
2003".

No detail on what exactly that means; I presume it's
the original set re-issued with some extra music (or possible stereo
mixes to replace some of the stuff that is mono).

[EDIT] The
general list of contents apart from the main and end titles is episodic
suites from 'Identified', 'Exposed', 'Survival', 'Conflict', 'Ordeal',
'A Question of Priorities', 'The Square Triangle', 'E.S.P.', 'Confetti
Check A-OK', and 'The Long Sleep', and an 'alternative' score for
'Identified'.

This is, in itself, the same line-up as the original set.

I asked informed sources from Fanderson if this story about new UFO CD's istrue, and got a confirmation.

All the best,
Branko

As the original music was almost certainly recorded and mixed to be presented in mono (stereo TV sound was years away), then personally I hope that itremains in mono.

In general, I'm against any "updating" which produces an end result which doesn't replicate the work of he film makers at the time, given the technology they had to work with.

Some people suggest that more modern methods would have been used if they had been available at the time, (often trying to justify "colorization"). Possibly, possibly not, but the aesthetic decisions the programme makers made, in those very different circumstances, would have been different.
Simply applying modern techniques to the end product of an older technologydoesn't replicate the results which the original creators would have achieved, if they had been using modern technology.

Barry Gray and his collaborators certainly wouldn't have chosen to strive to get the optimal results in mono, then wait four decades for someone else to mess about with their work in an attempt to remix the original into stereo.

After all these years, I am surprised nobody has managed to dig out all theATV/TV21 Sound effects that were used throughout that 1963-70 period. As adesigner, I would kill for all those stock sounds, plus Barry Gray's custom sounds for UFO and others. They all seemed to stop getting used after themid-70's, but no libraries ever offered them for sale.

Maybe Fanderson could have a sniff around.

Hi,

Speaking purely personally, I am really grateful for ANYTHING new that's related to UFO.

I'd rather wait to see what the Fanderson Team have come up with before speculating, and picking over the details about something we do not know aboutas yet... hope it's really GREAT!

Can't wait!

Yes, Fanderson is only allowed to sell these things to members, as
the copyright holders limit the licensing fees when it is done
that way. The original 2-disc UFO soundtrack CD cost around US$55
as I recall, making it quite pricey, although as we've seen, they
sell for hundreds of dollars on eBay.

As for whether it's worth joining Fanderson, I suppose that
depends on how much you are interested in receiving their
club magazine and have access to their exclusive merchandise.
I've been a member for 15+ years, but that's just me... :-)

I've got the raw recording of Barry Gray's UFO sound, but it's not a
whole lot better than what you hear on the DVDs... :-)

Can't help with the other stock sounds -- I'd like to get a copy of
these too!

Well it's too late for that -- Fanderson's first UFO soundtrack was
mostly remixed into stereo. Most of the stereo mixes are fine (even
by my picky standards), but there are a few that don't sound enough
like what's heard in the series. I think the worst remix is the
music from EXPOSED, when Foster is roughed up by thugs. That's
one of my favorite cues, and the Fanderson CD destroys it. Fortunately,
the mono mix is on my UFO website's music page. :-)

It's a shame that Granada Ventures licensed the music to Fanderson. Networkwould have spoilt us rotten-like their recent release of a 5-disc CD of THE PROTECTORS.

Considering Gerry Anderson made 'Stingray' in 1963 in colour, when colour TVs were still years away, I think you may be wrong. Barry Gray was particularly ahead of his time, and I suspect if he could have recorded the sessions in stereo, he would have. It wasn't uncommon in 1970, but I doubt they would have made a stereo soundtrack for the show, but the original tapes may well be, as they probably would have considered a soundtrack album.

The original tapes for the UFO soundtrack were 4-track, so Fanderson
has remixed these into 2-track (stereo). The original SPACE:1999
soundtrack LP was released in stereo, although I don't
believe Barry Gray had any participation in its release.
