There's a good argument in the aerospace world for adopting the maxim "if it aint broke don't fic it". If a desigbn works and does the job it's wanted for then why meddle with it and risk all sorts of complications. This, by and large, has been the Russian philosophy with their Soyuz launch vehicles. The design, by and large, hasn't changed since the early 60s; and it's a philosophy that has largely served them well. Dave. |

Well the reason you don't ever hear of anyone with the rank of Major is because the Majors are the ones who get assigned do all that stuff. Yes aircraft design has advanced quite a bit in the last fifty years or so, as have the prices. B1s and B-2s go for BILLONS, not millions any more, and the F-22 and all of the rest of the Next Generation Fighters aren't much cheaper. It is cheaper to update an existing airframe rather then design/ buikd a whole new one. James Gibbon <[hidden email]> wrote:"Brian Lindstrand" wrote: > Belated welcome to the group! I like the idea that regular handguns are used in 2070 - when you think that basic handgun design hasn't changed much for a century or more, it makes sense. I think they used ordinary-looking shotguns in Aliens as well. It adds a bit of 'realism' somehow. I watched a documentary about B52 bombers last night which claimed that they are likely to be in service until 2045 or so, more than 90 years after they were first built. Which is a bit sad, really, if it turns out to be true, when you think of how aircraft design developed over a few years in the last century. James Your use of Yahoo!
