ORDEAL

Hi all,

We haven't had any discussion on A QUESTION OF PRIORITIES for a
while, but I see our two weeks is up to discuss this episode. So
it's time to move onto the next episode up for discussion -- ORDEAL.

So, if you have any comments on this episode, please make them in the
next 2 weeks!

Without re-watching the episode, I can't get into too many
details, but basically:

* I thought the "it was all just a dream ending" was wasted.
After all, the dream episodes in CAPTAIN SCARLET and
SPACE:1999 took advantage of the fact it was a dream,
and killed off some regular characters and destroyed
the bases. Certainly, a proper dream episode would
have killed off Foster and perhaps destroyed SHADO
HQ while they were at it?

* In the original script (on my website), the writer
tried to make the dream a bit more obvious, by
having the characters acting increasingly bizarre.
It appears that the director didn't agree with this
approach, so he attempted to tone it down a bit.
However, in doing this, the characters just seem
odd -- like they are being poorly acted or directed.
Even Vladek Sheybal's scenes make my wince...

* It seems odd that there is such a connection between
the Skydiver crew and Foster. Although, if you look
at the original script, you'll see that this was
originally supposed to have been a Captain Carlin
episode! (and this aspect would have actually worked
if it was a Carlin episode)

* Also, there's just not much to this episode -- it's
loaded with filler to stretch it out to 50 minutes.

So far, the reason I see people saying that they like
this episode is because Foster has got his shirt off
and that they like to see him in an Alien helmet filling
up with green liquid. These reasons aren't good enough
for me -- although I do enjoy the party scenes with
Paul & Sylvia, and also the UFO crashlanding on the
moon was a nice effect.

I think all UFO episodes have something to offer, but
for me, this is my least favorite episode.

Yep. Paul's chest is the main reason I like this episode. The ending was
pure drivel, though. I can't say I necessarily dislike this one (after all,
Paul's chest is a big plus!), but I don't often watch it. As Marc says,
there just isn't much of a storyline there.
Yours,
Denise

yeah, sure it ain't your favorite episode and Foster with his shirt of does
noting for ya.

But it say it had been Straker in the sauna not Paul I just bet this would be
the "FAVORITE" episode ever in spades!

Trivia Note: Quinn O'Hara who played Sylvia Graham was Miss Scotland in 1960.
A natural brunette, 38-24-37. Worked in several films in Hollywood before
returning to England.

Okay Amelia, I agree that it is very unlikely that Straker would
booze it up and dance and party the night away(I leave it up to fanfic
writers to get the guy a social life) but I think everyone has to have their
day at SHADO's little health spa and that mean the sauna! No drooling on the
TV and VCR and DVD player.
I can understand people thinking it is a disappointing episode in
that it has not real action except in the dream/halucination Foster has when
he passes out. Dreams are always a movie and TV cheat. They show you
something happening that doesn't. Marc's remark that perhaps they should
have killed off some of the main characters and destroyed SHADO HQ is an
interesting idea. I mean they were doing a dream and a scarely one at that
so why not pull all the stops out. But I think that sort of answers itself.
If they did that it would tip the view off that it was a dream much earlier
on.
As for myself I'd rather see Gay Ellis in the sauna but that is just
me.

James K signing up to be the ladies masseur at SHADO's health farm!

Pam McCaughey-2
Yup, this dream eps is just like when Dallas brought Patrick Duffy back as
Bobby Ewing and the preceding season had all just been Pam's "bad dream"!!!

In reference to Marc's comments on ORDEAL... I agree, being a dream it
should have done something more liberal. Wouldn't it be great if some of our
good fan fiction writers were to have fun and re-write ORDEAL! I'd love to
see what they come up with!

Yes, although my original suggestion that Foster die wouldn't make
any sense, since he's the one having the dream! So, okay... destroy
Moonbase, Foster and Ellis declare their love for one another, and
SHADO gets revealed to world with a stream of reporters flooding into
SHADO HQ... :-)

So, Marc! Go write it!!!! *grin* (Actually, I used a short dream sequence
in my 17th story where Moonbase is demolished. It fooled Anny. We fanfic
writers live for that. *Hi, Anny!*)

So what? I'm a gullible Piranha...
<hmph>

<pout>
I'd answer to that but it would be a one-liner... ;-)

Anyway, move your butt, bébé and get that story on line and let us know when
it's ready!

And congrats to Jessica for "Old Ghost"! Any others in the works or on the
verge of publication, Madame? 8-)

<hmmmm>
Still no news from Deep Discount about the second UFO set?

Foster and Ellis!
No way no how. Not in this or any other parallel earth, Marc.
But then like you said its Foster dream so let him get lucky for once.

Actually since it is a dream I had a thought of something that is often used
in TV shows and films that have these dream plots. That is when the dream
ends things from the dream start happening in the real world and the question
is left can the characters change the things that they saw happen in their
dream?

I'd recommend that everyone email them -- if they get enough interest they may
look into listing it faster.

Well, Foster couldn't die - it was his dream and it is said that if you
die in your dream, you die in reality. (Although, I have died in dreams
and I'm still kicking .... aren't I?)

Well, Foster with his shirt off is good enough for me - LOL! The first
time I saw it, I was surprised by the dream ending and I enjoyed that,
so I have fond memories of this ep.
