Wessex is correctly the modern name for a kingdom that ruled parts of
southwest England in Anglo-Saxon times. It is derived from Anglo-Saxon
"Westseaxna" = "of the West Saxons". But in fiction it is sometinmes
used for an unspecified fictional English county. There is evidence
that Gerry Anderson imagined Harlington-Straker Studios to be a
replacement for and in the same place as the real Elstree Studios, and
West Harlington village for either Elstree or Borehamwood. But I did
not realise this early, and in my UFO series stories (see
http://www.buckrogers.demon.co.uk/ufo/ufo.htm ) I put SHADO
headquarters in the Somerset / Wiltshire area, wherev the old kingdom
of Wessex was. (In that story the public learn the truth, and Derby
North parliamentary constituency gets - well, read the story)
