The Hollywood Theatre is putting on a double feature of UFO and Space :1999!
**FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE** 70's Sci Fi Double Feature Tribute to Gerry Anderson Nerd out with the Hollywood Theatre! We're bringing you two retro features for the price of one! British producer Gerry Anderson, known for his "Supermarionation" puppet work in Thunderbirds, broke into live-action science fiction in the 70's with UFO. The future is 1980 and SHADO forces (an acronym for Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization) fight to keep human organs away from alien UFOs. SHADO defends earth by space - where female Moonbase personnel wear purple wigs and silver cat suits, by land their HQ is underneath a film studio, and by sea with a submarine that launches a helicopter! UFO's second season was canceled leading Anderson to create Space: 1999! In which the Moon is shot out of orbit after a uranium explosion (don't think about it, just go with it). Now, the citizens of Moonbase Alpha are trapped on a planetoid that cannot be steered, stopped or even slowed. They are truly lost in space. We're playing the most Lovecraftian episode "Dragon's Domain" (undoubtedly a partial inspiration for the movie "Alien") where the Alphans discover a graveyard of alien ships floating in the void protected by an interdimensional, tentacle monster that can hypnotize its victims into being devoured by it. Peppered throughout the show will be our usual array of goofy commercials from the 70s, many of them, sci fi themed & we're gonna give away a couple prizes for folks who can answer trivia without using their phones. WHAT: 70's TV Sci Fi Double Feature WHEN: Thursday, August 23rd 2012 @ 9:30 pm WHERE: The Hollywood Theatre, 4122 NE Sandy Blvd ADMISSION: $5 Let people know about this event! Thank you, The Hollywood Theatre 4122 NE Sandy Blvd Portland OR, 97212 503-493-1128 http://hollywoodtheatre.org/ |

A very difficult question Marc. Most of us will pick a personal favorite like
say The Responsiblity Seat or Closeup. But as this is not going to be just us seeing it and we need to pick a episode that would win over people not familar with the series might need to go for something that shows off the series like either the first episode Identified or Timelash. Still others might go for something that shows off the FX like The Man Who Came Back or Mindbender. While other might go smaller for the more psycological undercurrents of the show with episodes like ESP or Question of Priorities. Not so difficult.
AQOP would be the obvious choice for me as it shows the foundation of SHADO, the mystery of the aliens, the human factor (from several angles), the alien's tech, most of the SHADO tech and the scope of SHADO's global operation. Hi,
I suppose if the majority of the audience is new to UFO then it would have to be 'Identified' just to make any sense - as that's the episode where the premise, people and craft are introduced... My choice would be E.S.P. (scared me witless when I first saw it as a kid) Best to all, Griff --- In [hidden email] wrote: Well, that's a bit unusual! I would like to hear the opposite... which would be the weakest episode you don't want people to see??
The Square Triangle?? Bruce ----- Original Message ----- From: griffwason To: [hidden email] Sent: Tuesday, August 21, 2012 11:45 AM Subject: [SHADO] Re: PDX Fans! The first episode of UFO will be shown and then "Dragon's Domain" of Space: 1999.

I would also show Destruction to newbies and the one i would avoid showing them is Mindbender.

Mmm... the episode I wouldn't show anyone, I think, is Sound of Silence.
It's in the list of least favourites along with The Long Sleep, The Man Who Came Back and The Cat With Ten Lives. AQOP I would have to show back-to-back and preceded by Confetti Check, though. Maybe we should try and create a ranking poll from best to worst episode?
