You made several points about Mary from the two episodes she appears in that
I too had found. It took until dragon wrote her story about Mary, though,
before I was willing to see things from Mary's perspective. But certain
things were definite stereotypes of the storyline:
Mary's overbearing mother
Mary's henpecked father
Mary's immaturity and insecurity
Mary's hero worship of Straker
I'm glad that others saw those things as I did. Dragon touched on them
briefly in her story, making me rethink my idea of Mary as a total spoiled
brat. I eventually wrote "Full Circle," which is the nicest I've ever been
to Mary (or ever will be.) Of course, I had her grow up in the intervening
years. *grin* Since dragon didn't intend to end her Mary story happily, I
felt that some sort of closure between Straker and his ex-wife was
necessary. And my story allowed them to get back together at a time when
Mary was mature enough to handle dealing, not only with the truth, but also
with the choices she had made. It's funny that now when I watch CCAOK and
AQOP I don't walk away feeling so distraught. There's finally a resolution,
even if only in my mind.
BTW, are you working on a UFO story now?
