I think Sylvia stated that it was part of the futuristic fashion statement,
and that all the women would dressed alike. The Catsuit was designed to be
convertible from the utility suit to the skirt version. Hence the Gay Ellis
undress scene in the first episode.
I liked the look of the purple wigs and the moonbase girls have always been my
favorite "look" in UFO.
