Hi Marc and all:
I liked this eps immensely for several reasons. Mostly of course, for the
drama unfolding in Straker's life. Someone wrote the comment that Straker
was a controlling hubby _ I didn't see him as such in CCAOK - in fact I saw
him as more of the "I've got my work to keep me warm, what's YOUR problem?"
Of course, whoever said Rutland was controlling was more to the point. He
spent his time glowering behind his scruffy beard and was obviously afraid
Mary was still in love with Straker. (who could blame her - that adorable
Gemini? At least Ed Bishop is the Gemini). I think she feared a "showdown"
of sorts when Ed returned Johnnie to the Rutland house. I get the impression
from both eps CCAOK and QOP that Mary was a very wimpy, wussy female who
needed to be told what to do, what to think, etc. She was drawn to
controlling men because she had little will of her own (you can tell I'm not
a fan of Ed's ex!). Even when she married to Ed she made no effort to get a
job, make friends with the neighbour women, set up a support system for
herself like so many other women who are married to servicement do. My
hubby's aunt was married to a Brigadier General in the Canadian Airforce and
she was as unlike Mary Straker as you can get - independent, smart, busy,
social, fun.
It is odd, that Alec, so normally attuned to other people's probs - dropped
the ball on Ed's turmoil, but perhaps he'd been told several times to "butt
out" by Ed and this time he did - with disasterous results.
I think the eps is also a major female magnet as far as Straker is concerned
- they get to drool over him and and feel righteous sorry for him at the
same time, ha ha (Yes, guilty as charged!). He also has that other appeal -
I call it the "Oh, what a darling daddy he is!" syndrome - a sure thing to
tickle all the ladies. Esp that glee he seems to be experiencing when he's
jouncing about with Johnny. In other words, Johnny was the only real
happiness he had - that and a job well done. But you can't hug a downed UFO,
so Johnnie was it for Straker. Ladies respond very positively to men who
love animals and kids......
Ciao - Pam
