1)They did either travelling matte,or back projection with Sea Gull X-ray in Identified, and to be honest if you look at it the effect is'nt very good.During the 60's and 70's the quality of these types of effect did vary considerably. The way they photograhed through the canopies of Sky 1 and the interceptors was better although this precluded any shot which included the pilot. When the pilot was featured it was either a close up or a low angle view.Perhaps it was a decision based on variety, seemingly ignoring the design of the model they were supposed to be piloting.
2) It seemed natural to me to land it this way.I was always fascinated by the concept of landing the huge SATURN V rocket at the same place it took off.Just think of the skill and technical endeavours that would have required.
Maybe this was the idea Derek Medding or Mike Trim had in mind when they designed the craft. Also variety must have been upper most in their mind as the Lunar Carrier already used landing gear.
3)Fortunately it was only Science Fiction ,so they did,nt have to make safety a major consideration. It just looked good.If you also take into account the way the Lunar Module exploded in the Dalotek Affair it would,nt matter where you had the landing pad,if there was an accident Moonbase would have been seriously damaged either way.
4)Well I think they all put their space suits on,clambered out of the nose cone. Then climbed down the side of launch ramp, hung off the landing pad (tallest first) dropping to the surface and entered Moonbase through one of the air locks.
Of course as that took up too much screen time it was never shown.Might be interesting if this footage could be found and put on the FANDERSON, DVD Version, of the UFO Documentary, when ever they get around to doing it.
