RE: Digest Number 855

Bill Cotter

This was one of those things that seemed to make sense back when
I first saw the show, but now would be really scary. I understand
that the US Air Force actually tracks items like a loft astronaut's
glove and has to work with NASA to set the orbital tracks for
the shuttle, space station, etc. They would probably have a heart
attack if Straker was out there blowing trackable items into
mini-missles.

The best thing for SHADO to do would be to put boosters on the
bigger items to push them towards the Sun. But, then we wouldn't
be treated to the Patented Derek Meddings Explosive Blasts we
all love so much!

I do wonder how anyone could possibly gather up all the little
pieces that are flying around up there?

Bill

The tracking is done by NORAD (the same guys that track possible
missile attacks). I have heard that they keep track of objects as
small as a large bolt.

Well, that certainly would be awfully expensive (and impractical).
Bear in mind that a lot of energy is required for something to
achieve escape velocity. Thus, to throw some junk into the sun, you
would need to attach a rocket much bigger than the piece of junk you
are trying to get rid of!

No need to. Eventually, most things re-enter and burn into the
atmosphere (the lower they are, the sooner they come back). Also,
and at least for geosynch satellites, after their fuel is depleted,
they tend to drift towards a specific region above the earth.

With a garbage scow equipped with a giant scoop and double tuff garbage
bags - and Captain Quark would HAVE to be in command, along with
