RE: UFO stories and the situ between Straker and Mary

Pam McCaughey-2
Dear Denise:

I've been diverted recently by my artwork, so I've been doing that as opposed to writing. The Art Society I belong to here locally has been preparing for a show of miniature works and as a result I've poured all my creative energy into that. I have finished two watercolors recently - one of Kirk's Enterprise and one of Spiderman - plus an assortment of flowers and other more "saleable" items.

I think the comment earlier that immaturity can happen at any age, or a dominating parent can hound one is quite true. I forget who said it, sorry, but, I DO agree. However, Mary's behaviour always struck me as being "childish" so I still think it's at least plausible that she was somewhat younger than Straker himself. I do find it odd that in CC-AOK she makes no effort to get a job (even a part time one), to make friends with her neighbours, to have friends over (does she have any? We never see any friends, do we?), to take up hobbies or other things which will distract from the fact her husband is away from home so much. I consider all this a sign of immaturity, no matter what her chronological age may be.

I must get over to the shadolibrary and check out these stories dealing with Mary and Straker.......

Pam

Straker and Mary

Yes, I tend to think Mary was extremely unmindful of her own condition the
day Johnnie had to be born so precipitously - both emotionally and
physically. I also think it's interesting that even tho she married Rutland
she didn't bother to have anymore children. Perhaps Rutland wasn't keen on
any kids and that's why he refers to Johnnie as "the boy" - certainly he
likely disliked the fact Johnnie was Straker's child, that Straker had ever
been a part of her life. I can almost imagine Rutland's secret relief when
Johnnie died - now he'd have Mary all to himself, and of course, mary must
have made things easier for him by telling Straker she never wanted to see
him again, etc.

RE: Straker and Mary

Veres, Mary
I'm sure this isn't going to be popular, but why is everyone so down on Mary?
The whole situation between them is sad, and yes some of what is being said
about her is true, but geez, Straker wasn't guilt free either. There's a
whole lot he could have done for the marriage. I'm a Straker fan too, but I
just can't agree with bashing Mary for their painful relationship.
