Hi List,
I was wondering what everyone else thinks about us being sensored by Marc. I'm just asking myself what point it is in starting a deep discussion about anything. If he can decide that he doesn't like it and sensor it then why do we discuss anything at all? I guess this question will make me unpopular, and I'm sorry if it's an upsetting question, but I'd like to know what's going to happen on the List in future. How can any of us know that what we say one is going to be accepted by Marc? Is there any point in writing to the List in the first place? Yeah, I am upset by what's happened, especially as all the mails that I wrote earlier today probabyl won't end up on the List at all, something which I consider a total waste of time and space. Why couldn't we finish our discussion first, then just say that this topic shouldn't be discussed in future? Now I wonder whether this will get published? If you don't like what I say, Marc, then please let me know. You didn't print any restrictions in your egroups "advertisement". Peace.....Karen |

Karen correctly points out that my [hidden email] "Rules" page
(http://www.egroups.com/files/SHADO/rules.html) makes no mention of UFO slash not being allowed on this list. Therefore, I'm going to fix that oversight by adding the following new rule: * This is not an "adults only" list, so please do not use language or discuss subjects which could be reasonably viewed as offensive. This included the topic of "slash" fiction, which has proven to be offensive to a significant number of fans. -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

Hi Marc!
Thanks for adding this paragraph to your rules! I'd begun to think I was going senile for a minute there and had forgotten how to read correctly... <G> Glad this matter is all sorted out now!! .....Karen |

The problem with this is, Marc, that it will make people wonder what 'slash fiction' is - I had definitely never heard of it until I was part of this mailing list, and I haven't encountered the word in that context elsewhere either. Perhaps you should explain the term for those who don't know it? (BTW, I totally agree with the addition to the rules! As I'm sure the majority of people on this list do.) >I was wondering what everyone else thinks about us being sensored by Marc. (I believe you mean "censored".) A mailing list is not a public forum -- it is the property of the list owner, who decides the policies. If the owner does not want a particular topic discussed on the list, or does not allow certain types of posts, that is his right. Most lists have a charter which details what is and is not allowed; a "no flames" policy, for instance, is very common. It is the owner's responsibility to manage the list as he sees fit, and I've seen more lists wrecked by under-management than the reverse. (I should probably mention that I'm a list owner myself, and hence sensitive to the problems of managing one. Mine is a slash list, though, so at least I don't have to worry about slash wars!) On this present subject, slash has come up many times in the past and much the same things are said every time. I realize that newcomers may not have heard it all before, but those of us who have been here for several years can pretty well recite the whole debate from memory. Hence, when someone comes in and starts raising the same ol' complaints yet *again*, people tend to get increasingly irritated and unpleasantness often ensues. I don't think it is out of line for a list owner to declare meta-discussions of the pros and cons of slash as off-topic on a list of this type. To anyone who is interested in the usual content of slash debates, I recommend that you read the following: ftp://ftp.lysator.liu.se/pub/blake7/misc/slash.defense . It was compiled from discussions on a Blake's 7 list several years ago, so the characters referred to are from B7, but the arguments are the same ones that come up in such discussions in every fandom. (Over and over and over and...) It covers most of what you would have been likely to see in any such discussion here, minus the personal slurs that tend to creep in. - Lisa -- Lisa Williams: [hidden email] or [hidden email] Lisa's Video Frame Capture Library: http://lcw.simplenet.com/ |

This is your list, Marc, and I like it the way it is! As Rob pointed out: there are other places for discussing other aspects of UFO (and being a Straker Babe's got its own real dangers, Rob! ;-) and if someone wants to start a new list for the 'S... Word' discussion, well, she may go for it... We tried to discuss this on another list, but... <shrug> Everyone was very much set in her ways! :-) Maybe what's needed at this time is a place where people who don't like UFO being 'slashed' will be able to gather and have fun... --Anny |

A few rules aren't going to kill anybody. Maybe if you look at it in terms of it not being a rule but merely common sense and consideration for others then it might be a bit more palatable. -- Suzanne Sutherland aka drdougjackson |
