I didn't notice this before, but there's yet another new UFO guest -- Alan Perry, director of KILL STRAKER and other episodes. Also, I don't own a video camera, but I was planning on bringing my regular camera & a micro-cassette recorder. I wasn't planning on having a mini-interview with anybody, but I was planning on attending whatever question & answer sessions they have on Saturday. Anyone got any good questions they want us to ask? -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

His main occupation I believe is teaching graphics, etc. Could you ask him what projects he has done if he has gotten involved with special effects again? |

>Could you ask him what projects he has done if he has gotten involved >with special effects again? Okay! That's the first question. I'm creating a file which I'm going to store all questions in, just in case there's an opportunity to ask them at Century 21. Anyone got any more questions for the UFO guest stars appearing at Century 21? Here's who's coming: * Gerry Anderson (co-creator, director of IDENTIFIED) * Ed Bishop (Cmdr. Ed Straker) * Gabrielle Drake (Lt. Gay Ellis) * Dolores Mantez (Lt. Nina Barry) * Peter Gordeno (Capt. Peter Carlin) * Harry Baird (Interceptor Pilot Mark Bradley) * Alan Perry (director of SURVIVAL, THE DALOTEK AFFAIR, THE RESPONSIBILITY SEAT, CLOSE UP, KILL STRAKER) * Ken Turner (director of FLIGHT PATH, CONFLICT, ORDEAL, ESP, DESTRUCTION, MINDBENDER) * Mike Trim (designer of SHADO mobile, SID, moon mobiles, moonbase) Here's one from me for Ken Turner: - in the episode ORDEAL, the original script purposely called for everything to become more & more outrageous, so that you could tell that something's not quite right. Yet, in the finished episode these scenes are all played straight. Do you remember why this change was made? And another: - I heard once heard a rumor that ORDEAL started filming with a different director, but that this director was replaced when they'd gone through several days of shooting & all they had to show for it were party scenes. Is this true? -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |
Not sure if this was supposed to be offline..
Questions about UFO series/season 2. Ask Gerry (and/or ?) to eloborate on what changes had been planned. ie. New sets/props/hardware and which went on to become part of Space1999? I assume the Eagles were not SHADO equipment. Compared to earlier episodes, "The Long Sleep" was rather surreal. And being the last episode, did it represent the direction writing for season/series 2 was going? Marc Martin wrote: > Okay! That's the first question. The later episodes appear to me to show a fairly obvious step down in quality compared to the earlier set of episodes. There's definitely a sense of the programme having 'lost its way' to an extent, with the surreal mindbending/ longevity-stealing/timefreezing stuff coming to the fore. And not only that but one or two of the main characters had disappeared as well toward the end - Freeman, Ellis, Carlin. I wonder if the viewing figures at the time bear this out? Speaking personally, if 'Timelash' had been the first episode, I might never have watched the second. Actually, do we know if Gerry Anderson has a favourite or least favourite UFO episode? James |

Might as well post the Century 21 questions on the list for everyone to see... this way others might see your question and either already know the answer or it might help them think of another question! Also, with Nick Williams subscribed here, who knows -- perhaps some of these questions will become "official" questions asked by the onstage interviewer? :-) -- Marc Martin, [hidden email] |

For US audiences at least, there are the Nielsen ratings.
Unfortunately I don't know of a web resource for TV going back that far. Maybe Gerry could recall how the show faired during course of the season and whether it took a hit with the Pinewood studios episodes. I assume the Eagles were not SHADO equipment. Actually, that sparks off a question of my own. How did everyone involved in writing/thinking up a second season for UFO feel when it became space 1999? How far had the UFO season 2 evolved and if any ideas had popped up for UFO 2, how were they changed to Space 1999 ideas? Secondly, was Gerry as satisfied with Space 1999 as he had been with UFO - would he have preferred a UFO season 2? (And whose idea was it to make Space 1999 more like a Mission Impossible 2? :-) I hope he remembers stuff from all those years ago... he has done a lot since.
