I found the entire DVD discussion to be quite interesting and a little
reminiscent of the hysterics that happened on the Online Alpha list when the Year One Space 1999 were released. But the SHADO list has always been a little more polite than the OA list so the grunts and groans over here are not as grating as the OA ones! : - ) The one thing that I didn't see in the discussion is the fact that Marc is in touch with the people putting together the disks and when he did the poll it gave us fans a rare opportunity to influence (However slight) the content of a new UFO release! That, by itself is slightly historic I think and even if you can't afford a DVD player, or afford to by the disks (I think the A&E disks if released like the Space 1999 ones will cost $21.25 at deepdoscountdvd.com) it doesn't cost anything to fill out the survey and influence the content of these disks! And I think Marc is right, I don't see UFO ever appearing on US television again since the Sci Fi channel ran it to dismal ratings (I think the ratings were bad for UFO and 1999 when they ran them or am I wrong about that?) back in the mid 1990's. If you have tapes or dubs that's fine but I like the idea of picking up a DVD in a store and looking at the extras and thinking, "Hmmm maybe I had something to do with that!" (Egomaniac that I am!) : - ) Something similar happened with the Year two release of Space 1999. A group of fans wanted to include the short film Message from Moonbase Alpha (Only shown at conventions, go here for details http://www.space1999.net/catacombs/main/epguide/txmfma.html ) in the Year two release. Not everyone on the list cared for the film or cared about seeing it but it cost them nothing but 2 minutes to send off an email petition to A&E. This is the same sort of thing, UFO is coming out both in the US and UK and there's still a little time to do something about the release. Maybe in 5 years the DVD's will be worth a lot of money like the Lasers are/were a few years ago if they go out of print! |

I'm constantly on "Yellow Alert" to prevent what happened on the SPACE:1999 list from happening here. It was really quite amazing -- fans had dreamed of SPACE:1999 coming out on DVD, and their dreams came true. But what was the reaction? Complaints! Insults! People attacking each other! I think 99% of the fans were perfectly happy with those DVDs, but the other 1% was intent on making everyone miserable with their endless, repetitive complaints. I'm hoping that the situation will be better here. Like you say, we're generally more polite here than on the SPACE:1999 list. But also UFO has supposedly been remastered to a higher standard than SPACE:1999 was. But there's always the opportunity for something to get messed up on the DVDs, and it's a certainty that the special features will be different on the UK and USA versions. Heck, I've already heard rumors that the French UFO DVDs will have extras which won't be on either the UK or USA versions! Anyway, it's certainly going to be "interesting" to see what happens this year with UFO being released on DVD in at least 3 countries! Marc |

I've only signed onto this group this afternoon, just after I fired off two e-mails to the A&E shop, one about UFO on DVD and what special features would be included, and two on the Blue Angels on VHS only, not DVD. Funny I should find a voting thing about special features!! LOL I've already participated in the vote, don't know if it's too late or not. I selected more than one item to be included as special features, like 10 items. I noticed 326 votes, but it seems, from the number of votes per item, people voted for only one thing. Am I a glutton? Hmmmm, glutton - Willy Wonka - on-line petition :-) Hmmm, A&E petition, like the Willy Wonka one, for respectable special features on the US release? Dan |

And no, you're not a glutton -- you can vote for as many special features as you'd like to see on the discs. The 326 vote figure doesn't represent the total number of people who voted - it represents the total number of items selected by everyone. So your vote added 10 to the total! >Hmmm, A&E petition, like the Willy Wonka one, for respectable >special features on the US release? Yes, prior to the poll, I recommended that people pester A&E about extras on the UFO DVD. Given their past releases, it seems that they don't like to spend much effort on the extras. Just put on the episodes and few publicity photos and they're satisfied. We need to find a way to get them to change their ways... at least for UFO... :-) Marc |

Some stuff is best left in book form (such as the recent Fanderson script book) or CD form (music tracks; I could be wrong, but I don't think you can play a DVD in your CD player). DVD lends itself to some really nice features - but in my opinion, the "extras" should complement the medium rather than overwhelm it. |

Not to start a really OT thread, BUT, if I do recall correctly, there was "polite" sniping on this list when the DE tapes were released ... or did we all forget that? :) Yes, 99% of the 1999 folks thought the DVDs were fine, but when you get "die hards" who have seen the episodes on various formats thru the years, it's really unacceptable to have episodes with color shifts, green tints, missing noses, etc. when the DVD format is by far one of the top formats around. I don't think UFO fans would be too pleased if such errors were introduced into the UFO DVDs - especially given the fact that DVD releases won't be happening as often as VHS. > I'm hoping that the situation will be better here. The BBC seem to do this quite a bit on their 'cult' releases. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp. |
