Re: Digest Number 1199

Neil May
Nick Braybrooke recently asked how old Ed & Mike are
now. Well, I think Ed is in his early 70s but I know
for a fact that Mike was born on Christmas Eve in 1941
so that makes him 62 this year.

As many of you know doubt know, Mike wore a wig in UFO
as he was losing his hair a bit, according to UFO
director Alan Perry, who also said he was very
self-conscious of the fact that he had to wear wigs as
Foster. In his first appearances as Foster, he didn't
wear a wig though.

Interviews with Mike and Alan Perry appear in the Fab
Yearbook 1 which may still be available through
Fanderson.

This is a bit off-topic but anyone who has seen 'The
Rack', the episode of 'The Professionals' in which
Mike appeared as John Coogan, may have noticed
Coogan's lack of eyebrows. When I watched this episode
a few years ago - I must have seen it when it was
first shown, if so, I can't remember Mike in it (until
1987 when UFO was repeated I never knew the name of
the actor who played Foster or whatever things he'd
been in. When I watched UFO in the early 70s, for some
reason I never found out the name of the actor who
played Foster although I never forgot the Foster
character in the intervening years) - I though maybe
Mike's face had been burnt in an accident or
something, but what actually happened was that he
shaved his eyebrows off to make the character of
Coogan appear more deranged-looking, although Mike
admits now that maybe he went a little too far by
doing this!

Just thought fans might be interested to know this
what with all the recent talk of Mike's hair.
Personally, if I was going bald I think I would let
nature take it's course or shave all my remaining hair
off. Ultimately, hair or no hair, Mike is a great guy,
when I heard him talk at a convention a couple of
years ago - and when I heard Ed talk too - it really
inspired me to get serious about my career as an
actor. It's just a shame that Mike is no longer an
actor himself or had the opportunity to capitalise on
his UFO success and become a really successful one.
