"Jumping the shark" came from the US series "Happy Days". In one less than
memorable episode of the later years, they had Fonzie being dared to
waterski over a shark. He had to jump over a pen in the ocean, and they did
a big multi-part episode about it. As you can guess, it was less than great
television.
So, since then, the expression has been used to show how a once powerful
series can sink so low.
