Re: Discussions -- COURT MARTIAL

Ah yes, one of my fav episodes! Jackson is suitably nasty (Alec: I'd shake
hands but you know how I can't stand to touch something slimy), Straker is
torn between his friend and a possible traitor to the cause, and Foster is
indignant and feeling framed. Lew Waterman puts in a fine performance as a
put upon witness at the trial - one who doesn't wish to rat out a friend and
fellow-warrior, and Henderson is a poophead (there see Marc - I didn't use
the S word....) as usual. LOVE the little tape recording pen Straker springs
on Henderson at the end. Fine acting all around and a good showcase for all
concerned.

Call me strange, but I quite like the character of Henderson. He's
really in your face. Character acting I think they call it.
In 'Court Martial' he had some of the best lines like: "Don't worry
miss, you weren't paid to stop runaway trains" he say's to his
secretary or something like that, when Straker and Henderson turn up
unannounced. This is was some of the best stuff I've seen on TV for a
while. Or at least that's what I thought. Thouroughly entertaining!

Cheers all for the welcome!

Karl,
I agree with you, this was one of Henderson's finer
moments. The one line in particular that I liked from
Henderson in this episode was when he confronted
Straker at the end by saying: "You think I'm a
pig-headed cretinous lout don't you Straker?"
Classic!

Yeah and absolutely stunning it is when Straker plays it back to him over
and over..."I like it, I like it"

Jason,
I wonder if Henderson is right about Straker? Maybe it's says more
about Henderson than Straker. It would be interesting hear Jackson's
views on this! He he!

I think it's one of THE best episodes ever...my favorite moment
has to be Jackson's reaction to Straker playing Henderson's re-edited
statement! He almost bust a gut there! A lot of great characterization
throughout the episode!

I think Henderson was "right" about his comment to
Straker. Why else would Straker play back that
comment over and over again on that pen tape-recorder?
Even more revealing was after Straker was finished
playing it back he remarked: "I like it, I like it!

I think Court Martial pointed out that not all of SHADO's battle's were waged
against the aliens. Sometimes it was against office politics in this case
Henderson who was put out at having his idea, SHADO turned over to his former
aide Straker to run.

It is difficult to understand the reasons for the
strong and personal enmity between Straker and
Henderson - so different from the early days, as shown
in 'Confetti Check A-OK' (filmed, ironically, after
both 'Court Martial' and 'Conflict'). Henderson taking
umbrage at being sidelined might be reason enough; but
Henderson says himself (in CCAOK) that his health
wouldn't permit him to become SHADO chief, and seems
happy with his protege Straker getting the job as the
next best outcome. Perhaps Henderson expected Straker
would be his puppet, doing exactly (and only) what
Henderson told him to, and was disabused of this idea
when Straker stamped his own leadership on SHADO ?
