Hi Babies,

Having spoke to a number of other con goers and organisers, what Mike has
said is in fact true - i.e they have not appeared at a convention of this
kind in Europe before. I have been going to cons for 18 years now and I have
never heard of Ed and Mike attending a con together in Europe. If it is not,
then it can only have been in Italy so maybe some input from the ISOSHADO
swingers would be helpful here to clarify the point. If by chance it is not
true, then Eclectic 21 can legitimately claim that it is the first time Ed,
Mike and Sylvia have all been together at a con certainly in Europe and
possibly the world - very groovy:-)

Hi John, well, don't forget that it's considerably more than
18 years since UFO was filmed!

While I agree that England isn't in Europe, I suspect that
isn't what you meant. The event to which I referred took
place in the North of England more than 18 years ago, but a
few years after UFO, so in the pedantic geographical sense
that England is a part of Europe in some sense (and the fact
that the forthcoming convention is in Leicester suggests that
he subscribes to this unfortunate point of view), what Mike
said in fact isn't true. Not a terribly important point,
and a simple mistake I'm sure.

I'm not contradicting any claim made by Eclectic involving
Sylvia Anderson, only Mike Billington's comment about himself
and Ed.

This wasn't a sci-fi convention - they were there only as minor
TV celebrities, MB being quite possibly better known back
then for his part in The Onedin Line. I can't for the life
of me remember what the event was and I wasn't there myself,
but I clearly remember that my friend, who was a UFO fan,
had been able to meet both Ed Bishop and Mike Billington,
and had got their autographs.

Hi All,

An interesting point Jim for which I was ceratinly not aware - but I was
actually referring as Mike was to a sci fi event. As you say, UFO was made
over 30 years years ago and it is inevitable that the memory will at times
let you down - bugger, what's my name again?

Jumping in the middle of this thread, hopeit hasn't been answered yet BUT
I believe that was Phil and Ed's Excellent convention??? I remember
picking up fliers for the con at the San Francisco Worldcon (I don't
remember the year but we didn't have kids then!)
I think Gerry Anderson also attended. If i ever find the fliers (They were
VERY fancy, I think, not just cheapo xerox fliers) I'll mail one to Marc to
scan.

The Gerry Anderson/UFO/Space 1999 fandom bug hadn't bit me yet so I
couldn't justify flying out to LA for the convention. BUT I remember
reading about it because I don't think I had ever heard of Gerry Anderson
attending a convention in the US before!

site?

Also one of them talked about this meeting and flying over together in an
interview covered in a magazine.

Gerry Anderson was at a con in LA where I believe he was the guest of honor,
but this wasn't the same one that Mike Billington and Ed Bishop appeared at.
The one GA appeared would probably have been in 1997 or 1998.

I am not familiar with the magazine interview above, but at the Fanderson
convention 96, Ed Bishop mentioned he and Mike flew over together to LA for
the con. He said the conversations were so interesting that it made the
flight seem short. Mike discussed with Ed how close he came to getting the
James Bond role. If I remember correctly Ed said this flight was the first
time he had talked with Mike since the UFO series.
