The SHADO Library can host stuff - in THEORY it has unlimited space and
bandwidth - in practice it's using only a tiny fraction of what I'm paying for. Contact me off list if you're interested. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |

There's not much need for pictures to be larger than a 5 MB JPEG (and on my site the largest are usually only 0.5 MB), while that SHADO Mobile was what... a 100 MB TIF? Marc |
MArc: Actually they are only *half* the size they ought to be for print resolution (normally 300 dpi). The whole point I did these was that people might like to have them printed, or even framed, as they will work will at their full original sizes. If you try to print any of the stuff on your site it will look awful. Web and print are two entirely different things. If you, or someone has the space to host these, I'm sure some people would appreciate them. I hope your bandwidth restriction gets lifted soon. :-) Marc |
I self host two websites, no bandwidth limitation :) The size of files is only the limitation of my hard drive for storage.
I have DSL Broadband service at home. The software that is used to operate a website is a free download, Apache. The only thing you need to pay for is the domain, a yearly fee of $10 or so. You need to log into a site like yahoo or Godaddy (two examples, but there are more) and point the world to your website. If you dont want a domain name, you dont need to do that. The web is run on ip addresses, like a phone number for your telephone. When you decide to call Uncle Jack, you look up his phone number in the phone book, then dial his number. If you want to look at UncleJack.com, you send out a request to something called a DNS server. The DNS service tells your computer, that UncleJack.com is located at 192.168.1.1. Your computer then requests a page of information at 192.168.1.1. Instead of calling your website http://UncleJack.com/myprofile, you can just tell people, my website is http://192.168.1.1/myprofile Here in the US, some internet service providers dont want you to host a site without paying extra, so they block you from hosting it, but you can get around it. Trust me, its very easy to run a website from your home computer. You just need a broadband connection that doesnt limit you( you can get around it) and a computer, some knowledge about port forwarding on a $40 router. :) Bruce ----- Original Message ----- From: Marc Martin To: [hidden email] Sent: Tuesday, June 22, 2010 11:50 AM Subject: Re: [SHADO] Re: Mike Trim artwork up for auction > The whole point I did these was that people might like to have them > printed, or even framed, as they will work will at their full original > sizes. I use one of these to point to my own Apache box. Not as nice as your own .com, but a lot better and more descriptive than using a raw IP address - especially since IP addresses are prone to change on domestic broadband services. There are tools to detect the change and repoint the domain name automatically. I only use my Apache box for hosting web albums and individual images, that sort of thing. So for example, if you don't want to pay for your own domain name, you could grab (say) ufosite.thruhere.net for free, if it's not already taken. |
