Re: Griff's A&E DVD Review

Neil May
Griff's recent email regarding the A&E DVD Review,
cast my mind back to when I was a kid and I first got
into 'UFO'. I remember it was one night in the early
70s and I couldn't sleep so my Mum & Dad let me come
downstairs and watch TV. I can't remeber what the
episode was but the programme was definitely 'UFO' and
although I didn't really know what was going on, from
that moment I was hooked on the programme.

Looking back on my childhood memories of the series as
an adult, I can vivdly remember episodes such as
'Court Martial', 'Ordeal' and 'The Square Triangle'. I
remember playing 'UFO' in the school playground, in
particular the scene in 'CM' where Foster dives
through the screen behind Straker's desk. I also
remember writing down what happened in this episode
and I think I may still have the old school book I
wrote it in somewhere!

I think the next time I saw 'UFO' was in 1987-88 when
the series was repeated on ITV late at night. I always
remebered that Ed played Straker and George played
Alec and I knew there was a character called Foster
too but until then I never knew the name of the actor
who played him. Well, during this rerun I learned the
actor's name and I was surprised that I'd seen Michael
Billington many times in the pre-credits sequence of
'The Spy Who Loved Me' and not known he was the same
actor who had played Paul Foster! I remember also
seeing 'KGB:The Secret War' on ITV in 1988 and after
that I also used to scan 'The Radio Times' for other
programmes Mike might be appearing in. I missed what I
think was his final TV appearance as an actor in
'Maigret' but I'm hoping they show his 'Magnum P.I.'
episode in the current Channel 5 weekday morning
repeats.

The next time I saw 'UFO' was in 1996-97 and I
remember being disappointed that the cancellation of
'Kill Straker!' so that BBC2 could show snooker or
whatever meant the rerun of the series didn't continue
until 1999!

Thanks to Griff for rekindling my interest in my
previous memories of 'UFO'.

Neil

He wasn't in Maigret much - only a brief appearance. He was the guy
everyone was looking for and once they found him, they killed him, poor
chap.

He has a few lines in Magnum - some even in English! LOL! (He speaks
Russian - do casting directors think he looks Russian or something?)

:-)

Man, if you find that old schoolbook? Scan the description you wrote -
I'd like to see that. 8-)
