Hi guys - I think the whole issue of why the moonbase was built aboveground
was so the miniature experts could create this really cool looking
installation on the moon surface. The interceptors are launched from
underground bays again for appearances' sake and to add "coolness' to the
show. We have to remember that alot of what doesn't make sense to the story
was probably based on financial or creative problems associated with the
production of the show. The idea of the Skydivers launching a separate
manned aircraft is pretty silly and technically improbable - but man it sure
looks cool when that bird breaks the surface!
Gene Roddenberry came up with the Transporter idea because S/FX wise it was
going to be too expensive to try to show the Enterprise landing weekly on a
planet. Same with UFO. Alot of decisions vis a vis technology in the show
came from production considerations and costs. So lets not take it all that
seriously.
I've often thought it was silly too that each Interceptor (and there's only
3) carried just one warhead, that the alien ships seemed to come together in
3's and the spinners were so small for the missions they were on. There's a
ton of technical flaws which I'm sure the people at work on UFO2 will have
to sift through and re-consider. I know I took the liberty of changing alot
of technical things when writing Orion. I'd change even more to make it all
make it more scientifically/technically accurate. That's one thing I liked
about Trek - no matter what eps they got into, they did make an honest
effort to make their science seem within the realm of possibility.
UFO has some great looking hardware! But, if you look at Space: 1999, their
Moonbase Alpha is also above ground, and probably a re-working of UFO's
Moonbase to save money at that. It's not just what doesn't work with reality
- its what the production team can do within their budgets!
