I can't help with your questions but I am delighted to find Project Sword is not forgotten!??

I once had 3 of the toys (the spacecraft) and I still have the annual.??? From memory, the only mention of Project Sword in any of the shows was in an episode of Captain Scarlet when Colonel White tells Scarlet thet project Sword will still go ahead.?? I always assumed that it was going to be the next Supermarionation series but for some reason it didn't get made and they did Joe90 instead.? Is that right?

Nice one David! Glad you remember it too. Nowhere near as popular as UFO, the PROJECT SWORD toy line does have lots of fans around the world! I've gota blog dedicated to the toys and related toylines like SPACEX and GOLDEN ASTRONAUT. It's amazing how much there is!

I've been told that the Captain Scarlet reference is 'Operation Sword' but I've never seen it so I can't say if its to do with Project Sword or not. The history of SWORD is murky at best but it's most likely that Century 21 staff went on a toy buying trip to the far East, bought some great looking space-ships, added a few NASA desigms and hey, presto! SWORD was born. The ensuing comic strips and Annual became ongoing ads for the toy range! I understand that Gerry Anderson was not keen on SWORD as a possible for TV. I imagine that the subject matter was a tad depressing - the end of the world!

And yes, Kevin's right, it would make a great CGI film! probably be classedas a Disaster movie!

That "Blast Off Crawler" bares striking resemblance to mid '60's Mattel Toys (USA) "Major Matt Mason Moon Crawler".  I used to have quite a few "Major Matt Mason" toys when I was a kid.  Great looking stuff!

Hi, I just read part of the story about Project Sword ( http://search.aol.com/aol/imageDetails?s_it=imageDetails&q=PROJECT+SWORD&img=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.grahambleathman.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fsubaircraftcarriermed.jpg&site=&host=http%3A%2F%2Fprojectswordtoys.blogspot.com%2F2008%2F09%2Fstingray-submarine-aircraft-carrier.html&width=130&height=87&thumbUrl=http%3A%2F%2Fimages-partners-tbn.google.com%2Fimages%3Fq%3Dtbn%3A4YCqNGC5I94J0M%3Awww.grahambleathman.co.uk%2Fimages%2Fsubaircraftcarriermed.jpg&b=image%3Fq%3DPROJECT%2520SWORD&imgHeight=338&imgWidth=504&imgTitle=%3Cb%3EProject%3C%2Fb%3E+%3Cb%3ESword%3C%2Fb%3E+Toys+Moonbase+Central%3A+...&imgSize=65157&hostName=projectswordtoys.blogspot.com) & (http://projectswordtoys.blogspot.com/2008/09/stingray-submarine-aircraft-carrier.html)
Wow I did not know that the address would be that long.? Anyway, I do not recall seeing anything about this when I was growing up.? Did this stay in the UK?? I don't even remember seeing any of the toys around then for this.? Why not bring this back as well.? Say a live action show (Power Rangers etc) OR a movie.? From what I read it would do or should do good.
Dee

Re:PROJECT SWORD TOYS

Hi Dee,
Yes Project Sword was more or less worldwide in the 1960's especially
UK/Europe and the US/Canada (where is was sold by Taheel). It was all
over by the early 1970's as the Space craze waned (like the Monster
craze). It was never as big as the mighty Major Matt Mason but budding
Virgil Tracey's will have clamoured for SWORD toys to add to thier
Thunderbirds and Captain Scarlet fleet like this lad
<http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_RsCCizsWvNw/SZn1HIdc3HI/AAAAAAAAB-U/-hZlrTyWi\
WU/s1600-h/tv21-177.jpg> . Oddly enough Project Sword became connected
with UFO with some of its designs appearing in Imai's 1960'/70's Model
kits particularly the Moonbase
<http://projectswordtoys.blogspot.com/2009/05/imai-base.html> (which
Aoshima re-issued recently). and SWORD would make a great movie- the
story is about leaving a dying volcanic earth to search for a new
planet! A bit like the 50's B-Movie 'When Worlds Collide'. Just to make
life more interesting for earth's officials, SWORD has disgruntled
malcontents called Casuals causing havoc. All the ships are there. We
just need a Movie Mogul!
