Re-Reflections and crappy Episodes

Mark Davies-3
The problem with UFO (if indeed there is a problem) is that it
had a narrowly defined format. This, perhaps proved too restricting to the script writer.

No dobt Tony Barwick ,the script editor, working closely with
Gerry Anderson kept a tight rein on stories that went beyond
what was expected.

The hopeful result of this, like many other Anderson shows, was that a general familiarity could be maintained whilst retaining some imaginative licence.
This is possibly what led to the inconsistences and contradictions commented on by many supporters of UFO.

Having said this however, there are advantages to this approach.I happen to think that UFO would have lost its unique identity if it had been otherwise.

I can,t say I agree with Pam when she says that the ideas were poor, given this narrow approach.
I happen to think that Reflections was a very good idea badly realised, while Cat with Ten Lives is excellent ,deftly touching on the Psychic element inherent within the UFO
phenomenon.An area further explored,again,perfectly judged
in ESP.

I,m surprised that Timelash is not considered imaginative.
Quite the reverse in my opinion.I think it is a haunting eerie piece of work, that engages the imagination, unlike the Sci-Fi
of today that assaults you from all sides and leaps across the human imagination like it was a barrier to be avoided at all costs, concentrating only on the obsessive need for character exploration and development .

For this reason Subsmash may not be my favourite UFO episode, but I suppose it is difficult not to concentrate on character in the classic claustrophobic atmosphere of a crippled submarine.
Of course in the end its all down to a question of taste and in my case not without a tinge of nostalgia.I can imagine
a UFO 2,but I believe it maybe too subtle, with too much reliance on canon to satisfy an audience hyped up on the
excesses of modern day science fiction.
