To all those watchdogs out there: Back when I created SHADO-USECC, I
had NO troubles with FANDERSON or ITC who were aware of my group. As
you can see USECC is STILL going strong. Fan clubs, probably with
the exception of FANDERSON, make NO profits. I know I don't. Are they
(ITC) also going to shut down dealers of photos, mechandise, other
fan clubs that aren't approved by them? That'll sure take a lot of
work, wouldn't you say? I can't se why they would shut down a group
whose primary function is to help promote a series that is basically
unaired in many areas and probably forgotten about by them to begin
with. I don't want bad blood between Nick and I, who I don't know,
but I still DO plan on getting my club together.

You'll have no trouble with Fanderson, because we don't own the
copyright to UFO, this was simply a piece of friendly advice from
someone who has had dealings with Carlton. Not ITC, not PolyGram,
both
of which are in the past, but Carlton, who now own the programmes.

No exception needed for Fanderson either. Everything paid into the
club goes back out to the members in the form of membership packages,
merchandise, conventions and the general running of the club
(postage,
bank charges etc). Profits wouldn't have left enough money for CDs
etc, which is why commercial companies can't do them.

Carlton grew out of Central Television, which was the re-formed ATV,
which itself owned ITC. Many of the Carlton people were at ITC/ATV in
the 60s and 70s, and they are exceptionally proud that what they
consider "their" programmes have come home to them. They understand
the programmes and the special appeal they have, and want to ensure
that they are being presented the right way. Whether that means
shutting people down or just ensuring that a copyright
acknowledgement
is displayed, I don't know. You could, of course, ask them as I
suggested, but you clearly don't see why you should. The fact that
you
like UFO makes it your property to do as you wish, right?

Nick, I think perhaps you might have learnt the wrong lesson from
this -- in my experience on this list (all 6 years of it!), if you
mention the word "copyright", you're just *asking* for trouble! :-)

Friendly pieces of advice? *Generally* not a problem... :-)
