I have to agree with James on this one - Straker appears in CCAOK as tho he
is trying to salvage his marriage, and Mary and her mama decided otherwise.
He even asks Alec what he thinks about possibly letting Mary in on the big
secret about SHADO and Alec states the security people would consider her a
risk and probably off her. Straker probably did care about her and about the
marriage, he just had bigger fish to fry in the form of SHADO and all. I
think men and women with such horrible responsibilities often feel isolated
- that there is nobody they can remain close to because of the enormity of
their personal/professional situations. I often wonder if some world leaders
feel that way - what about FDR and Churchill during WWII? They were both
engaged in leading wars against enemies of their ways of life.
Going back to Mary's mama for a moment, nobody comments much on HER agenda -
but she was the one who hired the PI to follow Straker around until she got
the "evidence" she wanted to insist her daughter leave him. She's a figure
we only hear about, do we ever see her? And Mary's father makes a rather
cryptic statement when Mary has fallen and is in surgery about the mother
being difficult or some such thing. She's a very shadowy figure, this mother
is!
