Hi Christian - alot of great and valid points about this episode - and yes,
in some parts of Canada the trees are HUMONGOUS! ha ha. Esp in British
Columbian forests..........
I felt your comments vis a vis the Interceptors and the partially damaged
UFOs to be bang on! I think alot of the glitches we see in various eps are
due to faulty scripts and in some cases, not enough $$ to build proper
pressure suits and masks for the astronauts, et al.
Let's hope a revised UFO2 will come up with the proper suits. I quite took
issue in the same way with the movie "Backdraft" when it came out. My first
book was written about firefighters and their equipment, etc. In the movie,
the men did not wear Scott airpacks (which are now SOP with almost all fire
depts in North America), nor did they use man-down units, Motorola
comm-links, etc. I suspect this was done intentionally so as not to "hide"
the actors faces. However, along came a show called "Third Watch" a few yrs
later and the firefighters are shown wearing their Scotts and their masks -
it looks like the dialogue is dubbed or looped in after the scenes are shot
- makes alot more sense and is much more realistic. I have a thing for
realism in such things.
I'm drawing the parallel between "Backdraft" and the original UFO because I
believe $$ and production attitude got in the way of realism during the show
- the astronauts and Skydiver pilots didn't wear appropriate gear for the
same reasons as the firefighters in "Backdraft." I'm sure a new UFO would
address these problems.
Also, re: the smallish size of the UFO. I think this was a prob with the
diorama they constructed to show it sitting on the ground - it should either
have been larger or the trees alot taller! Having done a few dioramas along
the way myself, I know scale is very important for believability! It also
depends on how much time they had to put this together. The shorter your
time frame, the better your chances for mistakes.
There does seem to be more attention to such details in filmmaking today, as
opposed to that of 30-40 yrs ago. I've got several books at home called "The
Nitpickers Guide to the Original Star Trek" and the Next Gen. Maybe you
should consider a "Nitpicker's Guide to UFO" I bet there's a ripe market out
there for it!
