Marc--
Thanks for sharing this. It's been so long since I saw any of Space 1999, I only have the vaguest memories of it. My favorite episode was the one featuring the marvelous Margaret Leighton as a sort of mystical space crone. I have happy memories as well as the one where Peter Cushing played an alien anthropologist with whose daughter the Martin Landau character became involved. I remember being amused by a line in there something like: "But ... she's only a child ... barely 130 years old!" I thought the editing was odd in a lot of those episodes. I wonder, retrospectively, whether they might not have been trimmed for the US airings. It seems from what I can remember that there was an attempt on Space 1999 to have more character development than had been the case on UFO. Ironically I found the characters on UFO much more memorable; especially the onscreen chemistry between Straker and Foster, which the two actors seemed to play so well. The odd thing is that from reading interviews, it seems as if they didn't particularly like one another, though I gather they got on fine professionally. Just my impression ... Incidentally, I have seen a lot of Space 1999 DVDs in the shops here, but, as I don't own a DVD player, the temptation is easily resisted! Steve Boston, Mass. |
I had to get my mind into Space:1999 mode and I remembered something.
Sylvia that they used things from UFO in Space:1999 and I remember in the episode Mission Of The Darians the Moonbase Alpha crew going to this spaceship made out of a hollowed out asteroid and there finding a group of aliens. What first struck me was that the aliens wore the spacesuits of the UFO aliens and even had the same weapon. The other thing was that these aliens like the ones in UFO lived by harvesting the bodies of others. I had always wondered if this was the aliens from UFO in this episode or just recycling the props. Also a bit of trivia. This is the one episode of Space: 1999 that feature a quick flash of nudity. James K. |

Perhaps we could get together some weekend over at the Tang Center (MIT, building E52) and watch videos on one of the big screen TV's in the lecture halls. Teresa |

It's amusing to watch, but I sure don't think it has stood the test of time as well as UFO .... Anyway, thanks for the message from Sylvia, Marc! I'm on the north shore of Long Island but i will be in Massachusetts the weekend of July 13th for Readercon, also the last weekend of June for my Niece's wedding (I may be too busy with family in June to make a connection) I should have time during or after Readercon if anyone wants to meet for coffee and hang out for an hour or two! Readercon will be in Burlington and my Sister is in Northboro. That's the general area i tend to stay in when I visit them. Sometimes I drive into Worcester to check out the used bookstores for SF! >Hi Steve, >I'm also in the Boston area (Bedford actually, just on the other side >of Lexington). > >Are there any other fans of The Anderson's work in the area? No-it wasn't any of the main cast. Just a un-named female extra playing a
dead body being recycled for organs or maybe it was food (Soylent Green is people!). No Sylvia wasn't the one who did the costumes in Space:1999. That was Rudi Gurnreich whose only claim to fame is that he designed the topless swimsuit in the mid-sixties. "No second series of UFO for this?!", was my thoughts also. I think it was becuse the marketing people in New York told them that they did want another season of UFO but they wanted a sci-fi series like Star Trek and everyone tried to copy it. This seems very apparent in the second season when they brought in the character of Maya to be their Spock and they started using ripoff's of Star Trek scripts. Compare the plots of The Ultima Computer and Brian the Brain for example. Too many cooks do spoil the TV series especially when among them are those no talent clowns who ran ITC NY in those days. My summary of Space 1999 would be along the lines of technically first
class, some interesting plot ideas, but all together too slow. The look of the show is fantastic, and the atmosphere of the loneliness of Moonbase Alpha is certainly captured in some episodes. Bu out of the first series, there are only half a dozen or so episodes that really stand out. _________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. |

I was like many on this list when it came on always watching out if any players from UFO would be on but, sadly, not even a cameo role for Ed:-( I did watch both seasons of Space:1999 but it left me feeling very empty. My favourite eps of Space featured Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. I think they should have become cast regulars. They certainly would have livened up the joint! >Anyway, thanks for the message from Sylvia, Marc! >Incidently, did she design the clothes for Space 1999?
