I really resonated with your comment:
"The most scary thing I remember about the series was the alien/s - still
remember walking home on a clear, cloudless night, almost able to hear the
eerie 'UFO' music and afraid of an alien appearing from behind a
tree...while watching it now, these characters in red jump suits and gold
chains..."
And when I saw Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind - I had exactly the opposite
reaction - "Hey guys - can I go with you?" Just depends on how aliens are
depicted. UFO depicted them with high menace and mystery - we never heard
them talk, we rarely saw them face to face, Their skin was tinged green,
they wore those weird eye protectors that had little dots in the centre,
etc. I'm sure today the aliens would be wearing better suits than the red
ones with the chains, hee hee.
In Trek, many alien races were presented - some good, some not so good. Some
looked distinctly alien and scary. I think one of the neatest things about
the UFO aliens was that they could have passed for one of us - minus the eye
protectors and the green skin - now THAT'S scary - a fifth column invasion!
