Well, just to bring closure to this completely off-topic thread
of discussion... :-)

The following web page indicates that the first videotape
recorder was sold by Ampex in 1956:

Hi Marc - I don't know about videotape in the 1960's, but it sure was being
used in the 1970's & 1980's. This I know for certain because I was working
for a television station here in Canada from 1981 to 1992, and we used
videotape, quad 4 and other formats. Pam
