Oops... you found me out Dave. ;-)
Really though James' idea of using asteroids is much better, no radiation
to taint the organs.
Although it really would only take about 25-50 years for most of the
radiation to be a non-issue. The aliens could also skip the bombarding of
a fairly fallout-free (wind-wise) part of the world then wipe the rest out
even with nukes, it would probably only take a few hundred to collapse
enough of our civilization to prevent organized space-capable resistance
from us. Enough to break our resistance but not annihilate the ecosystem
of the planet. The southernmost part of South America would probably be a
good choice to leave alone. There is sparse but sufficient human
population and not enough of the pesky hi-tech to hinder easy harvesting.
Then just ignore the more irradiated parts of the world except to drop a
nuke on us again if we get too organized.
Nukes are workable but the asteroids are still a safer though slower option
for the aliens. I guess James will have to join me in the Alien Advisory
of Human Affairs bureau of the alien government. The rest of SHADO has
nothing to fear though, the other aliens don't listen to us anyway, we tell
them to 'crush human civilization' and their egg-heads trot off to take
over the mind of a cat. :-P
With all of the good discussion on the problems/merits of the nuclear
defense, I can see that it probably would not be implemented, which renders
all of the discussion of alien takeover of the nukes moot. Looks like
their best option is still the asteroids.
Being advised of the great potential and effectiveness of asteroid
bombardment, the aliens will perhaps implement instead a plan to cause most
computers to crash repeatedly, thus annoying us into submission... Oh wait,
field agent Bill is already on that one. Um... how about 2 lab mice, yea
that'll work... they could take over the world... ;-)
