I agree with the insights that Sci-Fi is on a major decline right
now - not in quality - just quantity. Reality shows are the way it
is right now and it is much cheaper to produce a reality show than
Sci-Fi. Since TV is all about emulating others - we will see reality
tv for a while but it will eventually die out. Before that time
though Sci-Fi will practically vanish. By the start of next season
we may only have 3 left - Enterprise, Smallville and Twilight Zone.
At some point a sci-Fi show will be introduced and will be the next
big hit aka(Star Trek NG, The X-Files). This new show will have the
timing to make it big and whether it is a brand new series or the
return of Doctor Who or a remake of UFO or Thunderbirds - the series
will be start a whole new era of Sci-Fi, until something else comes
along and so the cycle continues.
I think the only realistic way to bring back UFO right now is any of
the following -
Novels - the comic book is a step in this direction.
Audio Adventures - What better way to bring back any or all the
original cast and continue the series at any point form the early
building of SHADO to years after the events of the series. Doctor
Who is doing this with great success.
Animated - talked about already, this would be ideal for many reasons
and a return or remake would work in this format.
