I can`t imagine that SHADO would be so
heavily reliant on 1 SID, let alone have no satellite back-up for it, to the point of being blind, deaf & defenceless. If SHADO is as good as it`s supposed to be, it should have more than 1 SID, and armed to defend itself. Surely no military set-up would be so off hand about such tracking set-ups. |
I'd be interested in seeing how SHADO would operate
today, with every nation on Earth having satellites. SID would be hard pressed to stay hidden (so would, I guess, UFOs). Too bad the updated series never came to be. I would have loved to see "General" Straker battling aliens again. There had to be a huge blindspot every time the Earth or moon got in its way. You'd think they'd need a whole load of little watching satellites with maybe SID as the co-odrinating device? That was just something I thought. Jess |
Hi All,
One thing just occurred to me; Is the 'Utronic Equipment' mentioned in 'Identified', S.I.D? or, is it some other unidentified tracking equipment employed elsewhere? I know it is mentioned (I think in one of the novels) that after the Utronic equipment was safely (although bumpy ride in Seagull X-Ray) shipped to SHADO from the USA, it is mentioned that it was shipped to the Moon, but it just occurred to me, that the said equipment might be S.I.D. itself, after all, it is S.I.D. that does all the deep space tracking of UFO's... Any ideas? Best to all, Griff |

Actually SHADO breaks any number of rules, both from a military and from common sense.
After SID got blown away, it took them several weeks, maybe as much as a month to get everything ready to repair it. One would think that they would have had spare parts in a werehouse somewhere. SHADO is supposed to be a top secret group, yet they have insignia painted on ALL of their vechiles, including aircraft. Strangely SkyDiver is the only one that doesn't have a SHADO design on it. Even if you figgured that they offloaded Mobiles at military bases most of the time, someone would start asking questions since here was a military group that no one had ever heard of. I mean I can't tell you who the members are of DELTA Force or the mebership of the SEALS, but at least we've heard of them. And what about civillian employees on the base, or someone who just happens to be droping off a friend or something like that? There are so many examples of SHADO blowing security that it is a wonder that they haven't been splashed across the pages of all the newspapers of the world. But then, as I have pointed out before, this a TV show, where the script writers can have anything happen, just so long as it moves the show forward. If they need to "Poison" a towns water supply to give everyone an amnessia shot, then it is "Possible". If UFO existed today, it would be a much diffrent show, which is one of the reasons that I kind of fear any movie coming out about it. If they do any "Up Dating" at all, it would just screw things up. Hello
I am new to the group and this is my first post. That being said I also agree that Shado should have had more than one satellite such as SID protecting the planet but I think if you remember, it boiled down to one of the main reoccurring themes of the show. A theme which I found added an additional dimension and made it seem as if it was possibly situated was in the real world more than many other similar shows at the time. Budgetary limitations. I do not have the DVD set yet so this is all from memory but Shado seemed to be continually hounded by budget over runs and possible future cut backs if they could not produce measurable results. The introduction of always needing more equipment to do a proper job and the logistics involved of dealing with what they had was so different than any other Sci-Fi show. Not that these worlds should collide but this was the diametric opposite of Thunderbirds where the issue of actual cost was never even mentioned. Best for now John D |

"Too bad the updated series never came to be. I would have loved to see
"General" Straker battling aliens again." You can read some of my fanfic which has General Straker battling the green guys - www.shadolibrary.org. May I suggest Orion and Shifting Sands for starters (yes, I shamelessly pitch my stuff because I think the stories give folks a chance to imagine what an updated SHADO might be like.....) As for the SHADO logo appearing on vehicles etc - I dispensed with that in my own works because it seems stupid for a top secret organization to advertise themselves like United Airlines! Pam |

Hi Jess and all:
I tend to write my UFO fanfic for the men fans out there. No offence to the ladies, but I'm just not a romance writer and I feel silly trying to write dialogue about love. I'm more the shoot-em-up, blow-em-up type. Denise Felt teases me because I wrote a TOS story just recently (which will eventually appear on her site www.poeticlicence.com) and I created a relationship between two of my own characters (sorry ladies not Kirk, Spock or anyone else like that) and I told her I was afraid the relationship would appear to Love-Boat-y for my own comfort level! Oh, you can see some of my sci-fic artwork at my web site at www.pamelamccaughey.bravepages.com - I have done the MoonBase, two views of Kirk's Enterprise, and a small portrait of Chekov. I'm planning to do more to put on the site, but I've been tied up doing other artwork. I still have three left to do for Neil May who's writing The Adventures of Bullman and Cowgirl! Pam |

I don't write romantic stuff either, although I did have a sort of softer line in a story I was asked to write, but I know where you're coming from on feeling embarrassed about 'love' dialogue. I find the same thing. I have been slammed a lot for being 'canonical', but when I started writing UFO fan fiction I had been involved in writing proposals for the BBC's Dr Who range, and so just kinda carried on along the same lines, taking what had been established in the UFO universe and expanding it, without drastically altering the characters. I have added a great deal of background to the characters - that tends to be my angle really - and in particular have had a lot of stories involving people like Jackson, about whom we didn't really learn that much in the series, but nothing that contradicts what was shown. Maybe that's not being 'imaginative', as was said, but I find it takes a lot more thought to be creative AND work within a framework? Don't know if you've found that. Jess |

Hey both of you, your stories are read. I just finished reading Aprorri and Emily-3. I download them in bunches, then read them as I convert them into Word Rich Text Files. The only thing is my computer things all of your English spellings are "Off", and it couldn't make heads or tails of Jabborwok. (Nor could I the first time I read it back in Junior high .)

Hi Jess: yes I do try to write within the UFO canon (I know lots of others
don't but don't diss me yet) - I have to agree with you that writing within UFO canon can be a challenge, particularly if you are doing an updated version (ca yr 2000 and upwards) as I often do. The nice thing, however, about UFO canon, is that there isn't much of it! The show only lasted a year, and the writers were so inconsistant with so many things, It permits alot of latitude, ha ha! I too like the character of Jackson and I love to make him out as this evil eminence gris, pain in Straker's ass. I also LOVE to do crossovers. Look for some new ones to appear soon with Hawaii 5-0 and Magnum PI, and one with the A-Team! Pam |
> The nice thing, however,
about UFO canon, is that there isn't much of it! Exactly! You don't have to worry about continuity most of the time, and apart from Straker, we really learn nothing about any of the other characters' backgrounds. Which leaves you plenty free-run space to do what you want. As for the logo-thing, although I don't think I've actually done it yet in a story, I had an idea that since SHADO is technically affiliated with the United Nations, that on occasion they use uniforms similar to the UN ones. But that was after reading a lot of these 'true' UFO/abduction cases [great material for stories] and finding loads of references to the 'blue berets' who cordon off supposed UFO sites. I think it's a kind of standard thing with these 'secret organisations' in TV that you had to have your own headed stationary and trucks and cars with the logo on. If anyone remembers the program Poltergeist The Legacy, they had that. Jess |

Believe me, I appreciate it when folks read my stuff. As I was saying about
UFO canon, it's there, but it's also more wide open than Trek canon. That's the thing with trying to write Trek, you pretty much have to add new characters or alien races to the mix because so much else is laid out in vivid detail in the Trek universe, including the color of Lt. Uhura's toenails (not really but you get the picture....). I also love the cross over thing because so many other series are the same - not alot of canon but enough to keep you honest, and there are some characters that you just wanna see Straker go up against - like Steve McGarrett and Hannibal from the A-Team (I love it when a plan comes together). When I did the Dallas-UFO cross it was from a friend's idea (or challenge). Romance has never and will never be my strong point I confess but we can't be all good at the same thing. The ladies who write the wed and/or bed fanfic are writing for their own specific audience too and that's fine because there has to be something for everyone to read! Not everyone likes the shoot-em-up beat the crap out of the aliens stories. Pam |
