SHADO---United States Central Control
MONTHLY STATUS REPORT, VOLUME 43; SEPT 1978 Announcing the FIRST Annual SHADO Handbook Printing and Collating Extravaganza! Yes. folks. tha big handbook is really going to happen, and I, for one, can use some help getting it all put together, so all you Southern Caiifonia operatives who have secretly habored an insane urge to got involved in the mysterious intrigue of SHADO internal operations here's your golden opportunity. The festivilies are scheduled to get underway at nos 1/2 N. Van Ness (between Hollywood and Franklin), Hollywood, Calif. beginning at 10 A.M. (or thereabouts), baturday, October 21, and continuing to who knows when . If further work remains to be done. operations will reconvene same time, same station the following day Non-alcoholic refreshments will be provided, bring yowr own poison if you like. There's a 24-hour grocery just down the block for midnight (on midday) raids, should the need arise. Pound the clock entertainment featuring UFO, Prisoner, Man From Atlantis, and Fantastic journey videotapes will be provided. The apartment is inhabited by four cats, so those of you with fur allergies be forewarned. Come prepared to be ink-stained. The mimeo is a filthy machine if we end up having to use it (I'm still trying to pull off the finances to get it offset, but it's still touch and go) If you"re planning on coming, please give me a little warning, preferably through the mail since I'm hard to catch at home, but For those of you who have no phone phobias, my number is 461-1428, with the best times to catch me between 11 PM and 1 AM or between 6 and 10 AM. It should be an interesting experience and I'm looking forward to having a little help and meeting some of you. As further inducement (as if the above benefits aren't enough), everyone who shows up and pitches in will receive a formal acknowledgment in the next Status Peport. Promotional Letters and Membership Packets As usual things have fallen behind again in getting some of the club materials packaged together and mailed out. It was Dale's policy (and it should have been mentioned earlier, I realize with marvelous 20/20 hindsight) that as a result of the several month suspension of SHADO operations in 1977, renewing members who were offered a reduced-rate renewal fee would not be sent their usual yearly promotion notices and membership renewal Packet, the reduced fees not being enough to cover those expenses. Members renewing at the normal, $4.00 ($6.00 for foreign members) rate, would. however, be sent their packets. Page 2 Well, hardly any of the packets were sent out before Dale's death and a number of you have renewed since then. All promotion and renewal packets will he mailed out with the October handbook. I am sorry for the delay, but handling tnings by myself without Dale's guidance is not as easy as it might seem and I must ask for your patience and understadning in the matter. This might also be a good opportunity to explain a few minor operational details to those of you who have not been with the organization long enough to have learned all the ropes. First, you will not be issued a new membership card each year. As we have explained before, the cards are perionallq signed by the Commander himself And asking him to sign over 200 cards each year seems a bit unreasonable, not to mention expensive, what with postal rates soaring. What we do instead; is ask that you send us your card with your renewal fees and we will update the expiration date on the card and return it to you with your membership packet. A number of the renewing members have been confused concerning the number of stamps which should be included with their renewal fees. The answer is, twelve. Top two reasons: one) the handbooks, even at third-class rates require a lot of postage. The last handbook needed three stamps alonp and the upcoming one will be twice its size; secondly, I am hoping to be able to revert to a monthly newsletter, now that things are letting up a bit. Although I am very reluctant to do so, I am faced with the possible necessity of raising the membership fees. I am still in the process of evaluating the organization's financial situation, so the final votes aran't in yet. I have already been forced to raise the fees for the foreign members from $6.00 to $6.50 to compensate for the increased postal costs. The main reason that US membership fees haven't increased in a long time is that the stamps automaticaily kept us up with postage inflation. A good number of you have probably had dealings in the past with an organizat on called "Cottage industries" which offered UFO stills for sale. Cottage Industries was run by Colonel Jones with the help of a business associate that associate has been filling orders as best she can since Dale's death, but has no real intent in continuing the operation. Consequently, the entire Cotiage Industries inventory of stills from UFO is being turned over to SHADO USCC. These stills and perhaps additional offerings as well will be made available through the club, with any and all proceeds being funneled into the SHADO treasury. Although I am not thrilled with the notion of taking on even more responsibility, I do feel a certain obligation to the club members to make these photos available to them (beside which, the club can use the money). Please, no orders yet until I've had time to get things organized. You'll hear about it when the SHADO photo lab is open fur business. The second batch of SHADO patches was ordered on Auyust 21. This order is slightly different from the first in that the patches will be slightly smaller and will not have a rectangular border enclosed the SHADO insignia, The company has not yet confirmed our order, but we expect the patches to arrive around the middle of November or possibly before, so please dont't panic Renee Grace, Jeanne Campbell, or Yvonne Hintz. You have not been forgotten! Page 3 Sia Shyang Ing, the head of our Singapore operations, reports seeing Michael Billington and Barnaby Shaw in the BBC production of War and Peace. For those of you who might have forgotten (as I did), Barnaby Shaw played Commander Straker's son John in "Question of Priorities" (with re-runs in "Subsmash" and "Mind-bender") For you Los Angeles members, Channel 9 is periodically showing episodes of "The Saint". While channel flipping one night, I hit across an episode Ed Bishop was in. He appeared in several spisodes of the Saint, so you might keep an eye out for him. The PBS Children's Classic series is rerunning episodes of "What Katy Dit"! where Ed stars as the heroine's father, Dr Philip Carr. Advertisements. TIMEFRAME.......Planned zine for UFO and other science fiction. Submissions needed For more information, send Self-Addressed Envelope plus $0.14 to Evelyn Baker, 30 Snowcrest Ave., Willowdale, Ontario, Canaaa. M2K-2K7. Tapes...A while ago we sent out requests for members who had audiotape, of UFO episodes who might be willing to make copies for other members. The response, to say the least, was not overwhelming, but we did get two takers: David Weaver, one of our Maryland operatives, reports that he has available reasonable copies of most (if not all) episodes and is willing to provide duplicates for $3.00 an episode, which includes both tape and postage. David warns, however, that his local staticn likes commercials more than programs, so the episodes may be somewhat editted. Write to him at: 5605 Joan Lane; Temple Hills, MD 20031. Dawn McLevy was our second volunteer. She offers a single episode for $2.00 or two episodes for $2.20. The price includes one cassette tape, one cassette cover and postage. Both prices include Ampex cassettes. but her prices may be slightly higher now since the postal hike. Write to her at: 2834 Redding Rd, Fairfield, Conn 06430. Well, that's it for another month. The remainder of this issue is dedicated to our membership roster. The list is sorted by zip code, to mike it easier for members to locate other members nearby. The next Status Report will not be out until after the handbook. I'm off for a two-week furlough (vacation) in Washington D.C with some oo our operatives there, so any mail that comes in before September 21 won't be opened, much less answered, until after I get back. I'm under doctor's orders (Jackson's, that is), to take it easy and get some rest, but I hope to put the time to good use in typing the remaining pages of the handbook. Until October!
