I can`t agree with the comment that an ultra secret military base below a
film studio is illogical and impractical. There are a lot of things that are covered by very high official secrets: who`s to say that such bases, in the same vein as SHADO HQ, don`t exist. The only people that do know, are on a 'need to know' basis. We could argue for ever & a day that such places don`t exist in 'real life', but we wouldn`t know any better, unless a person does know about things & breaks the Official Secrets Act. |
Hi, all.
In regard to Kevin's comment: >I can`t agree with the comment that an ultra secret military base below a >film studio is illogical and impractical. I think my problem with this is that Straker is head of both the studio and head of SHADO; I mean, there are only so many hours in the day... -- Mark. |

Hi, folks!
r.e.: >Remember he comes across as a >hands-off kind of guy, (you see this in Conflict ) and only infrequently does he >watch a screening like he did in Reflections or meet his actors like in >Mindbender. >Amelia Hi, Amelia. As you say, the show's creators address the issue of Straker's double role in the series (There's also Howard Byrne's significant: "You're a hard man to pin down, Ed Straker," in MINDBENDER) - and make it work, I agree, but... I just feel that it's a flaw in the show's concept - born out of necessity, according to FANDERSON, because the first idea proved expensive (I'm sure you know about the Pentagon-style secret base thingy?). As it is, the Film Studio thing is fun, and well exploited in the show (COURT MARTIAL is another story which uses it well), but, realistically, when your staff have got the fate of the world in their hands, and are fighting an enigmatic adversary, burdening them with the problems of the film industry seems unnecessarily distracting... -- Mark. |

I actually found it amusing that no one noticed an entire building
descend into the ground whenever Straker wanted to go into SHADO HQ. I don't know. Considering some of the other strange things that have occured at H-S, painting Strakers car green, man hunts, cat hunts and the like, would a sinking building be all that odd?

Really? I never realized that. I guess that's because
of the lack of exterior shots of it happening (and why would they show us a shot of a building doing nothing?). Cool. I found Straker to be the most fascinating character, perhaps because they gave him more to do. His personal life is a shambles, filled with tragedy because of his dedication to SHADO. As such, he's become quite cold, but does allow his human side to peek out in moments of quiet. Ed Bishop really brought him to life. Welcome Scott! Don't mind the insanity. It grows on you after awhile<g> James K. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] |
