I wouldn't hire the SHADO plasterer to work on the walls of my house. It's dreadful.

I think the facilities at SHADO HQ are fairly swish for an underground military base. I once was invited to the facilities at NORAD, and in some of the outer chamber corridors there was water literally running down the walls, and boy was there a damp feeling in much of it. Super Hi-tech Sci-fi in the central complex though. They even have their own shops, barber, etc. The floors were individually sprung. The inner parts of NORAD are really individually sprung (on HUGE springs) buildings connected up within a massive cave and corridor structure, with a huge central reinforced concrete dome protecting and covering the central complex (which is certainly not damp!)
I think the SHADO HQ walls quite nicely imply a military minimalism, Spartan yet practical (Can't imagine General Henderson allowing budget for too many soft furnishings ;). I think if the walls were really nicely finished, it would be possible to forget or certainly might not imply that the base in eighty feet below ground. I think that 'seamed' effect neatly implies this... and must have taken ages to do - make it seamy instead or smooth... I quite agree Griff! Anyone can do smooth plastering. It takes a real expert to make it look as rough as it does in the HQ! And as you say, it does fit in with the theme of the programme, although how they justified Straker'sposh desk is another thing!
The didn't even put permanent steps in the Control room from one level to the next. But there were some interesting pieces of art work in various places. Maybe Straker's desk and many of the other items are unused props from the 'upstairs' film studio? That could explain a lot of the artistry...
Hey, there's a story waiting to be written... imagine if a delivery for SHADO HQ became muddled up with one for the studio... that could be embarrassing. The White House underground bunker that's shown in one series ("day", if you like) of '24' has a similar look. Nice tables and furniture and so on, but no snazzy plastering or wallpaper. Was the SHADO HQ a studio set, or did they film it in an underground car park or something? James |
Hi
It was a studio set. You can see parts of it, Moonbase, SkyDiver in 'Mindbender' Rgds, Griff --- In [hidden email], James Gibbon <jg@...> wrote: > > On Tue, 23 Mar 2010 10:11:41 -0000 > "griffwason" <griff@...> wrote: Was the SHADO HQ a studio set, or did they film it in an underground car park or something? James wrote:

The ITC filmed series were, unlike some of the later Euston series, based and shot almost entirely within film studios. As many as possible exterior shots were filmed within the studio grounds and virtually all interiors weresets. Off-hand I can only think of one interior location off the studio lot used in any of the classic ITC series. That was, I think, Woburn Abbey inan episode of Randall and Hopkirk - an interior which would have cost a fortune for any reasonable studio replica. Certainly any regular interiors were sets. On any film, but especially on these series, time was and is a great deal of money. It would be cheaper to build a set than to waste time having the cast and crew travel to an unnecessary location. I always wondered if that was her, having not seen many photos of her myself. The "character" is even referred to as Sylvia in the episode, correct?

Ordeal.. one of the few episodes where I am grateful that I can fast forward great chunks! Looking back at some of the episodes, they were really padding them out with some dire stuff. Ordeal and the party scene, Long Sleepand the whole sepia/drug scene. or am I looking at these in a cynical way?
I wonder if the Andersons really planned out the UFO series. There are so many inconsistencies. (thats a hard word to type!) I think, if we are to behonest, UFO could have been great, really really great, but somehow it just missed it. And even so it has a huge band of loyal followers. Probably due to some great actors and some great models ( mobiles etc) . I'll still love it though! I just think that it could have gone on and on if more thought and planning had gone into the whole thing. I wonder what others think? What would YOU have changed? done differently? Please don't send me nasty emails! Had enough of that from the Alan Tracy Fan club!! only joking - no-one here would do that! -- In [hidden email], "Bruce Sherman" <brucesherman@...> wrote: > > In the commentary on the DVD set, doesn't she say its her dancing?? In my A&E DVD set, Sylvia and Wanda Ventham do the commentary for Timelash, and I don't recall Sylvia mentioning dancing in another episode during that commentary. Or are the commentaries that different on other (British, etc.) versions of the DVDs? I'm curious.
