Uniforms from SHADO?

Always thought Some of them Were Cool!

Just asking.

No, but I do have some thoughts about the costumes worn in the series. I suspect the fashions as well as other visual aspects (sets, props etc) may be a lot bigger part of UFO's secret of success than it is usually given credit for.

I was thinking about this the other day...a friend, years ago, was a big fan of Lost In Space and this friend told me a theory that L.I.S was let down by the aliens which always looked silly and fake and badly conceived.

When I refreshed my memory of the show, I realised that it, too, had the sort of nifty 60s style colorful futuristic costumes and cool SF sets and props that UFO had. But as soon as the alien of the week appeared, from a production stand-point the whole show fell apart.

On the other hand, the series The Invaders had the similar theme to UFO of aliens infiltrating Earth and the enemy looking convincing by disguising themselves as people. (UFO had the other SF version of this gimmick, people controlled by aliens). But The Invaders seemed horribly dated to me because it was so totally of its day and very much like every other 60s American show.

But UFO had the best of both worlds, so to speak. By setting itself in the future, it had the colorful costumes and sets and the timeless feel that Lost In Space had, (avoiding the dated, same as everythin else on TV feel of The Invaders) but it had the humans as alien-infiltrators theme (avoiding the crumby rubber monster syndrome of Lost In Space).

I think UFO needed both of those aspects to work as effectively as it did/does. One or the other on their own would not be enough. So I think those Century 21 Fashions are a huge part of the show's success.

Besides, they're the fun part which balances out the rather grim nature of SHADO's war with the aliens.
