SPACE 1999 better than UFO

Mark Davies-3
Richard mentioned

>From my point of view, I am not supprised at all. 1999 >(first series) is less dated and a better series (I still love >UFO though).

I think UFO is immeasurably better.

Unfortunately I see SPACE 1999 as something that should have been UFO.

It was a mongrel creation,ok if it was a dog,but not a Television Series.
UFO had certain elements open to criticism, but the original idea was unique and some of the episodes were excellent, tying in with the contemporary ideas surrounding UFO folklore.

In my humble view nothing since has come close to emulating this.UFO 2 could only be made by those being absolutely faithful to the original series, maintaining its format and its 70's retro style.

Regards Mark

Re: SPACE 1999 better than UFO - no way!

Pam McCaughey-2

Dear Gentlefolk - weighing in on the UFO or Space: 1999 argument - I have seen both. I prefer and always have preferred UFO for a number of reasons. 1) the whole premise of Space: 1999 seemed rather silly.....2) altho the miniature work in Space: 1999 was definitely as well done as UFO, the storylines were so-so...3) Much as I appreciated Martin Landau and Barbara Bain in Mission: Impossible - I wasn't impressed with their performances in Space: 1999 (BB even won an Emmy for her role as Cinnamon Carter in M: I at least once in the 1960's and we know Landau went on to win an Oscar in the 1990's) - they seemed very wooden.....4) I felt the jeopardy and character development was lacking in Space: 1999 compared to UFO. Straker was definitely more complex and interesting than Commander Koenig, not to mention Alec, Paul, etc. Of course these comments are purely IMHO....Pam the Canuck

I think that any comparation of Space: 1999 with our precious UFO is pointless. UFO is the best TV series ever, and Space ist just OK (sometimes)... I can't bear to watch an entire episode from the second series, to be honest...
Best to all,
Branko
